What HDD are you running in your T6x ?
Re: What HDD are you running in your T6x ?
I'm running a Hitachi 5K320 (320 GB) in my T60p. No idea if APS is working, I never even installed the software, as I've found that APS is way too sensitive for me.

Re: What HDD are you running in your T6x ?
I got a 80 GB 5K320 from warranty, so I guess it would work. I'm not sure if I can test it, though - for some reason, a lot of software for Win7 refuses to install in Server 2008 R2.
Re: What HDD are you running in your T6x ?
I have a T61 and use both the Intel X25-M SSD and a Samsung 128G SSD both equally well. The system - with XP - boots to a usable state (including the login) in under 30-40 seconds.
Though SSD's supposedly have power advantages, I have not seen any noticable gain in battery time with or without an SSD.

Great thread. Just ordered the Scorpio Blue 500GB drive for my T61p, should have it in a day or two.ninjaronin18 wrote:

Running Seagate Momentus 7200.4 320GB here. Recently installed to replace my stock Fujitsu 5400RPM 160GB drive. My T61 become too noisy and power hungry (or so it seems) but no considerable improvements performacewise. Now I consider WD Scorpio Blue 320 or 500GB, which as far as I have researched reports in this forum and other places is not considerably slower (and some say that it is even faster) than Momentus 7200.4 but a bit quiter and more power efficient.

Scorpio Blue arrived, installed sweet as - gotta love Windows 7 System Image
One thing that I noticed, with my old 160GB Hitachi I had a Windows Experience Index of 5.2 for the hard drive, now it is 5.7 - I went from a 7200 rpm drive to a 5400 and got better transfer rates

My previous 200G 7k2 Fujitsu just kicked the bucket, so I got it returned and replaced by a WD 250G Scorpio Black 7k2, so far haven't noticed much difference in performance.
It does make some clicking sounds now and then, but I'm guessing its normal. I hope I don't have to return another hdd...

I've bought this WD Scorpio as well, my T60p originally came with a Seagate 100GB 7200rpm HDD.yak wrote:Running Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200rpm in my T60.
I don't notice a big difference in processing speed (both are 7200rpm), though the extra storage is more than welcome nowadays

Whats the suggestion / consensus now?
640GB / 500 GB
or some upcoming new
750GB / 1 TB?
So far the Scorpio Blue seems the favorite - here & newegg? Hows the Hitachi Travelstar?

I got the WD Scorpio Black 320Gb. It runs cool, quiet and fast - I get a Windows Experience Index of 5.9 for the hard drive... I'm happy with my choice. I actually bought it from Amazon with free shipping and got a better price than Egg at the time.

I am running a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 250GB in my T60. This is the single platter version of the 500GB. Benchmark data is here:

WEI is also 5.9 for this drive but likely benchmark against a 320GB drive will be better.
I also have a WD 320GB PATA 5400RPM in a T43p and the data is here:

I had a Samsung HM321HI in my T60 and it worked great, now it's been moved to my wife's Z61m and still working fast, silent and cool...
My X60 has an Samsung HM500JI, which is also quite and cool, but the 320GB version should be faster due to being a single platter model. Albeit I have to say in normal tasks like browsing and emailing I didn't note any difference in performance.

320GB WD Scorpio Black (7200RPM) in my T60p. Scores a 5.9 in the Windows performance index, and does the job nicely for me. Fairly quiet for a 7200RPM drive, and no discernible heat output. Throw in the excellent warranty, and I'm quite pleased.

Re: What HDD are you running in your T6x ?
I picked up an Intel X25 SSD to replace the OS and Apps drive (Seagate Momentus 7200/320GB) for the speed and heat advantages. Since I'm pretty much stuck with a 32-bit OS on this machine (T60p 2623DDU) I'd really like to just clone the current partitions and be done with it. but I'm reading a lot of horror stories about what it takes to do this on XP systems.
Does anyone here have some firsthand experience with doing something like this?
Any and all help is appreciated.

Not from my side, but since you upgraded your TP with an SSD I would recommend to upgrade the OS and go for Win7. It has native TRIM support and it's better optimized for SSDs as XP.Scratched wrote:Does anyone here have some firsthand experience with doing something like this?

Ultimately I will end up going to Win7, but there's so much installed on this machine that I'm unsure of compatibility for that I've got to stay XP for the moment.
I got the cloning done successfully and read a bit on the Intel site the the X25 doesn't require partition alignment so the XP's standard starting sector is fine. Now I just have to get the device bootable and I'll be ready to go.
Fingers crossed and all that...

WD Scorpio Black 160 Gb in a T60p, partitioned into 40Gb for programs and the remainder for data. Very quiet and quick drive. Work time = 2611 hours, temperature under load = 41 deg (while defragmenting) otherwise about 37 deg. This was in the T60p when I bought it recently, but would recommend it. Time on 9-cell battery up to 5 hours depending on workload so there seems to be little penalty for a 7200 drive.

You're aware that there's an XP virtual machine in some versions of Win7? That allows you the best of both worlds, you just don't get the XP part in the cheap versions of Win7.Scratched wrote:Ultimately I will end up going to Win7, but there's so much installed on this machine that I'm unsure of compatibility for that I've got to stay XP for the moment....
Last year I upgraded to a Seagate Momentus 500GB/5400rpm. It took one month and three additional RMAs to replace the first drive, which was DOA, with the fourth drive that knock wood has worked well in the year since. But I've lost all faith in Seagate, especially since I paid for the "48 hour express replacement" and when I reminded them--on the 3rd RMA--that my 48 hours was becoming a MONTH could they please at least express the next one? They said no, that was impossible, nobody had the authority to ship one faster. Not even after they'd screwed up and shipped 3 bum drives in a row.
There's a WD Scorpio Black 750 in my immediate future. Not for the extra speed, because I've seen 5400 and 7200 drives run about the same in this machine. But for the extra two years on the warranty, 5 instead of 3. I suspect that means better qc selection, not just a higher setoff for warranty costs.

I don't know if I will use it, but I am tempted to install an SATA OCz SSD that I have had for a while. It's 64gb, so the actual size would be the same as the 60gb in the T60 I ordered.
Have to receive the computer first.

Re: What HDD are you running in your T6x ?
My T60 arrived on Wednesday and I messed around with it before I wiped it and did a clean install (Burnt the recovery disks first obviously). With the stock 60gb hdd I found it slightly sluggish, so I threw in my OCz SSD.
It didn't get past the examine disk part, just failed. So, I tried the drive in another computer, SSD was dead
I have a 3 year warranty on it, so it's going back Monday. In the meantime, I got myself an Intell X-25V 40GB SSD without the JMicron controller. This little computer flies now, I tried 7 on it and it's great, just reduced my battery life a little with Aero installed. So, I have XP Professional SP3 on it with the SSD tweaker.
Working perfectly, and boots fast
