New memory not recognized

I replaced my keyboard today, and while I had it off I added another piece of memory. I had the original 1GB in the bottom slot and added a 2GB into the top slot. I was sure I got the right type of memory, it's a DDR2 667 SO-DIMM. Well, I snapped it into place, put the palmrest back on and turned the computer on. When I got to My Computer/Properties/General, it's still showing 1GB of RAM. I haven't run any other tests.

What would be the first step to seeing what the problem might be? Maybe I missed a step?

The first step would be to remove the original 1GB RAM module and seeing if the T60 boots or beeps ...

meaning take out the 1, and put just the 2 in? would it matter which slot it goes in?

Doesn't matter, just try the 2GB module by itself...try both slots.

Ok, I'll give that a try, thanks.

It boots up with just the 2GB and My Computer/Properties/General shows me having 2GB of RAM

OK, now if you put the 1GB back in (leave the 2GB in) what does my computer show? If it's 1GB, then you have a RAM compatibility issue. Personally if that were my machine and that was the case I'd leave the 2GB module in (remove the original 1GB module) and call it a day, or else return it and get (2) like modules, .e.g. 2 x 2GB Crucial PC2-5300.

If I do want to try and get 3GB, would a possible solution be to get a 1GB that is the same brand, etc as the 2GB?

Well, there's another advantage in running 2 x 2GB, even though only 3GB will be usable on a T60, you will be running the RAM in synchronous dual channel mode, which is slightly faster than asynhchronous dual channel. The other consideration is that 2 x 2GB PC2-5300 is cheap nowadays..

Ok, I'll try both again and if it's doesn't recognize the 3GB, I'll run just the 2GB. But if I were to buy a new, identical stick of 2GB (exact same brand, everything) RAM, I'm pretty much guaranteed not to have any more compatiblity issues?

Well, with the original 1GB in the bottom slot and the new 2GB in the top, it recognized only 1GB. But I tried putting the 2GB in the bottom slot and the old 1GB in the top and it now recognizes 3GB. Maybe just one of those quirky things?
