T61 14.1" 4:3 : T8300 or T9300 CPU Upgrade possible or not ?

I've posted in the threadabout CPU upgrades on T61s , but I didn't want to hijack it so I figured it would be better to start my own thread.

I'd simply like to know if my system supports a T8300 or T9300 without issues. I've read about sensor issues at boot and needing to press the ESC key every time.

Can anybody answer this simple question please :) ?

Here are my specs :

Sorry mods if I broke any rules.

EDIT :

I've upgraded to latest current BIOS 2.26

EDIT 2 :

Smooth sailing

With that motherboard, you'll likely get the beep and error on bootup with the T9xxx becasue of the thermal sensing differences between the two systems. If this happens, just hit escape and you should be OK.

You're probably better using the T7700 - it will be a bit faster but will also be hotter. I have 2 T61ps - one with a T7700 and one with a T9300 - don't see any difference at all between the two.

What is the build date of your computer?

I'm not sure, as I bought it used from a member here. How can I look it up ?

EDIT :

Also, I wouldn't mind getting a T7800 as opposed to the T7700 if that's possible. My T7100 just isn't powerful enough anymore... I was trying to get a CPU with less power consumption and 6MB of L2 cache, which is always nice. I do realize that it makes no real world difference though, so I just don't want to spend on a CPU and regret it later on because of motherboard issues...

I figured it wasn't worth wasting my money on a possibly incompatible CPU, so I ordered a T7800 2.6ghz 4MB L2. It should serve me well..

Look up the warranty expiration date on the lenovo site (you need your computer model and serial number). You can calculate back the 1 or 3 year warranty duration from that to get the build date. If it was after ~ Jan 2008, you should have the latest motherboard.

So, the T7700 & T7800 uses analouque sensors and are thus fully compatible with the older MBs?
Also, will all T9300 be compatible appart from the sensor issue or is it made in different versions for different sockets?
I am looking to grab one of these 3 cpus from ebay and I am a little confused about the different sockets.

Correct me if I am wrong. I do believe the new magic bios made by one of our members here have created a bios that doesn't cause any error with the new chip on here!

middleton has made a modified bios to disable the error message when you use the T8xxx and T9xxx CPU in non-compatible T61 motherboard (the bios also enabled the SATA2 feature).

my only question was if all the cpu I mentioned are socket P or if any of them are made for other sockets. Using Middletons Bios atm, didn't give me any issues so far.

I think a good and quick way to know what can be installed is by looking at the current, shipped with CPU.

If it is a T7xxx, the machine has the analog sensor, if it has the T8xxx then it has the newer digital sensor.

Mine came with the T8400 CPU, and currently am running the X9000 with no issues, however, I am also running middleton's 2.27 BIOS for SATA2 speeds with no issues. His BIOS does suppress the start up warning message also should you want to upgrade.

Hope this helps!

T9300 = Socket P
T7800 = Socket M
T7700 = Socket P
