Hard drive caddy orientation
Hard drive caddy orientation
Should the metal grating in the hdd caddy be at the top or the bottom? Does it matter?
Re: Hard drive caddy orientation
It should cover the PCB (if that's what you mean).

Re: Hard drive caddy orientation
The pcb is inside the hdd case, it's covered. Or am I thinking about it wrong? I'm talking about one of these:

Re: Hard drive caddy orientation
That page shows a HDD with the caddy already installed.
One side of the HDD has the labels, the other shows bare circuit board. The caddy covers the board. The black strap is on the opposite side of the connectors (as seen on the linked page).
After installing the HDD in the caddy, you insert it into the laptop with the caddy grid facing up.

Re: Hard drive caddy orientation
Hey, are you guys sure about this? On the WD hard drives is written "Fragile, do not cover any hard drive holes." All the holes in the hard drive are located on the PCB side. Thoughts?

Re: Hard drive caddy orientation
You should be okay with that. I've never really had a problem with covering them, as they are filtered vent holes in order to relieve changes in atmospheric pressure. They don't need that much airflow, and the minuscule gap between them and the caddy will be sufficient.

Re: Hard drive caddy orientation
You are absolutely right. I tested my thought by flipping the hdd over in the caddy so that vent holes would be exposed, but it didn't make any difference in temp at all.
