T6x v. T4x optical drive

#1 Post by vinuneuro » Sun Aug 30, 2009 11:07 pm

What's the difference? On ebay I see some are advertised for both model lines, some are only advertised as T6x.

I believe they're interchangeable, but the bezels aren't quite the same. The T60 drives are a better choice. Some of the T4x drives were pretty crappy.

Yes, they are interchangeable, I know because I have used the t6X on a t41. as mentioned above, the bezels are not the same, the t6x ones have a rectangular bezel, so when you use in a t4X system, it sticks out. Provided you do not drop the system on the right side it should be fine. The t4x on t6x just looks weird, with the beveled bezel sticking back into the system, showing the bottom of the base (rollcage?).

The t400 systems use a diffrent interface (SATA) so it is not interchangeable with any of the previous ones even though they are the same size.

They are all pretty crappy, really. At least the M a t s u s h i t a ones. I've had 3 M a t s u s h i t a Ultrabay Slim multi burner drives in 3 different laptops (one T42, two T60), and all had to be replaced within the warranty period. And I am not a heavy CD burner/user on my laptop...

But the ones on the T6x are at least noticeably faster (8X compared to 2X) and can do Dual Layer...

Try getting a Hitachi-LG model. FRU is 39T2679 for GSA-4083N (T60) and 39T2829 for GSA-U10N (T61), which is a bit faster.

One thing I would like to add is that a T4x Ultrabay secondary battery will not work in a T6x machine. The connector is totally different between the two.

Other than that, I've used my T4x drives in my T60 as a curiosity... it works, but I'll admit that it looks a little strange.
