wired internet stopped working

It used to be that I would plug in my ethernet cable and the wifi would automatically shut off and switch over to wired. Since yesterday this stopped. I run Windows XP Pro. I tried going into network connections and enabling Local Area Connection but it gives me a Connection Failed! and stays disabled. Any ideas?

I'm guessing either your wired network, cable or adapter has gone belly-up, or you've received an automatic update that has re-set your settings.

Weird...I went into device manager and from there I was able to enable it and now it works.
