Broke my headphone jack..any hope of a repair?

#1 Post by computerpro3 » Sun Sep 06, 2009 9:27 pm

Well due to me being a complete idiot, I tripped over a mini to rca cable whine my thinkpad was hooked up to my Marantz receiver. The plug bent inside of the headphone jack and apparently broke it - the headphone jack is now so loose that it won't grip headphones and when anything is plugged in there is a buzzing sound like an internal short or ground loop.

How much would this cost to have Lenovo fix it out of warranty? Does anyone have any experience with something similar?

Most likely the "repair" would be to replace the entire motherboard. This assumes that the headphone jack is mounted on that board and not a daughter or auxiliary board. It's easier to simply replace the entire board than it is to go through the trouble of unsoldering/soldering a new jack.

If you have friends fine with soldering, just ask them to replace that for you, it shouldn't be a hard job.

"Hard" is a matter of perspective. If you're lucky enough to have a system which uses through-hole leads on the headphone jack, then yes, it might be a fairly easy soldering job once you use a solder sucker to remove the existing solder and lift out the broken jack. If, however, the jack is of a surface-mount type, then it may not be too easy to get a soldering iron down on the leads. Another possible obstacle is if the headphone jack is part of an array of jacks. I'm not sure of the arrangement on a T6x system as I don't have one. You may have a hard time locating a suitable replacement; other than poaching one off another T6x motherboard.
