T61 networking problem (both wireless and wired)

#1 Post by kchung » Wed Sep 09, 2009 3:28 pm

If the user boots up without the Ethenet connected, the wireless works fine.

However as soon as he connects up the Ethernet, weird stuff starts happening.

If he switches locations between work and home and is using standby or hibernate, he has to disable and re-enable the Ethernet networking device.

If he wants to use wireless either at home or at work and he's connected previously to the Ethernet and hasn't rebooted since connected to the Ethernet, he has to reboot the system off the Ethernet to get the wireless to work. Disabling the wireless and re-enabling doesn't help.

I seem to recall that the Ethernet device retains/displays an IP address when you do an ipconfig even with the network cable removed.

Any suggestions? I haven't done much yet other than verify the problem. I was thinking about swapping his drive into another T61 to see if the problem follows the hard drive or the laptop.

Well, it should work fine with the default install. Are you using Access Connections? Windows? something else? to manage your network connections? Does this only happen after sleep or hibernation?
