Wireless N adaptor will not connect at N speed

I have a T61 with a 4965AGN wireless adaptor. I just got a D-Link wireless router and set it up in tri mode B,G,N. When I connect with my T61 it will only connect at G. Any ideas? I thought the 4965AGN is a N adaptor.

Thanks.

It is an N adapter. Have you tried setting it up in N mode and not Tri Mode? Is that possbile to do?

yeah I should try that, but I have T42 that I connect to it too and that is only a G. I could try it just to see if the T61 will connect at N. I was just wondering should the T61 connect at the highest possible speed?

Thanks for the reply,

Unless the D-Link router is dual band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and is fully 802.11n Draft 2 compliant you wont be able to achieve 802.11n 270Mbps link speed.

You will also need to enable WPA2 security on the 802.11n link.

FYI--many t61s came with that adapter with the N permanently disabled/killed by lenovo and will never operate at n speed. My t61 was that way. I had to replace it. You should check out the inventory for your machine on the lenovo support site.

They did? Why on earth would Lenovo install the AGN card if the N fuctionality was purposefully disabled (as opposed to installing the ABG card)? And why would they disable N functionality anyway?

They sure did. I have one right here and it's model name is 4965AG. Has 3 antenna connectors though. I have no idea what possessed them to cripple perfectly good cards like this.

Intel stopped manufacturing the previous non-N ABG cards, and did an N disabled (lower cost) version of the 4965 to bridge the gap until demand for ABG cards in laptops dropped away entirely.

Strange! When I bought my T61p, I had the choice of the Intel ABG card or the Intel ABGN card. I chose the N card because I wanted N functionality in the future. There was no mention of disabling the N functionality when I bought it. Now, If I had ordered the ABG card and they didn't have any, would this have been the reason for supplying a disabled N card? In other words if I bought and payed for the N card, is mine not "disabled"?

If your T61p has a 4965AGN then it will support 802.11n operation.

The Intel 4965AG cards that had N disabled have always been clearly referred to as such by Lenovo....
..... (though not always by unscrupulous after market resellers).

Are you using WEP? Intel wi-fi cards won't go over 54mbps unless you're using WPA, or no encryption.
