Is my T60 motherboard dying?

During boot up, the scrolling thing that goes from left to right under the MS XP logo will just freeze. Or it'll actually finish booting up and once at the desktop the cursor will freeze in place or the screen goes blank. Model is 2007-64U.

Indeed such behavior is typical for a motherboard problem. But it could also be a different part (RAM, HD).
Does it ever boot properly? If so, does it continue functioning after?

Yea sometimes it finishes booting up and will make it to the desktop. After that, sometimes the cursor gets frozen, or the screen just turns off. To make things a little complicated, the ram is 1 month old, and the hard drive is a few days old. But those wouldn't cause the screen to turn off right?

I haven't sent the RMA'd WD hdd back yet so I stuck that in and it was still happening.
Pulled the 2gb of Corsair ram I added, and it's now working properly. So now I'm not sure not sure if it's the ram or an intermittent mb problem.

My money is on the RAM being defective or incompatible. The T6X series has some solid RAM slots. I don't recall seeing a failure in that area on a T60 reported here or elsewhere. There were definately some issues with RAM compatibility on that model though, particularly with the Value lines of Kingston and Corsair.

If it was a compatibility issue, the problems would've been there from the getgo right? This ram has been in for a month now. Maybe it's just defective.

Well, Corsair has a lifetime warranty, so you have nothing to lose to RMA it for another stick.

It's happening with the Corsair ram out now too. So I think it might just be a general MB failure.

Aloha!
I tend to agree with Harry. However,
Before i would think about replacing or repair, i would run some diagnostics. But the first thing to do is boot into safe mode and see if it's still flaky. Try safe mode with networking and see how much you can do with it. Then you should use the DOS diagnostics. It's been eons since i've used anything from ibm/len since i have my own really high end stuff. But I would think PC Doctor is more than enough to let you know if anything is flaky hardware wise. You can also use Memtest86 which works pretty decent. memtest86.com
Whatever you do, make sure you use diags outside of win for better results.
Good Luck!

I'm fairly certain it's the MB because it's locking up with two difference hard drives and with the Corsair memory not installed.

why not try booting bartPE and see if it's ok... or just burn a Windows Memory Test (WMD) CD and do extensive test on your corsair.
