I know this is off-topic, but how exactly did they gimp the audio on the newer Thinkpads?

Onboard audio I/O really isn't that big of a deal because I will be using outboard audio devices.

Guys we don't use the internal audio for much of anything other than watching movies on the plane.

I have both IPS and none IPS and it's worth the money to me, but I have no idea what these machines should go for currently. I just love having a good keyboard and an incredible screen.

V7 is built to take advantage of discrete graphics and lots of it, as well as multicore processors. The more (of everything) you have, the more simultaneous transfer functions you can run. If you only intend to use 1 at a time then it's not really anything to worry about.

It wasn't my dream machine, but it seemed to be the closest I could find. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but with all this talk of IPS and its virtues, not to mention that it is a solid machine with good seller rating and a warranty, I figured it was the best option for me right now.

I'll admit that is a bit pricey, but I am sure you'll love it. I've been using my new X60s for a while, so going back to my UXGA IPS on my T60p from the X60's XGA non-Flexview panel is just... night and day. The X60 has a good screen, don't get me wrong... but the Flexview simply has to be seen to be believed.

Once again, there really isn't much difference between the V5200 and the V5250, performance wise. The V5250 simply uses a little less power.

That was what did it for me--the UXGA IPS. I can replace a lot of things, but it looks like replacing the T2600 with a T7600 would be even cheaper than replacing the screen and I found the 512MB flavor of the V5250 to be too rare in a 4:3 format. Besides, the T2600 is only about 20% slower and about 10% less efficient but is less than a third of the price than the T7600.

I'll post back here once I receive it and let you all know what I think and if I'm going to become hooked for life.

It's a T7600G cpu if your still looking to upgrade. Apparently you can overclock this cpu, but I have no idea if this is a safe thing to do in t60p.

Could be useful if your crunching data and on a tight job deadline though if it's safe...

Ok, I just received it yesterday (it was delayed a week because of a shipping error) and opened it up when I got home from a gig around midnight. I am amazed. It's fast, which I expected, but what I didn't expect was how incredibly good the software is. The BIOS is almost as powerful as what you'd expect in a desktop and even the wireless control software just makes sense. It's easy to use, well planned and the screen is OUTSTANDING! I've heard you all talk about it, but Holy Liquid Crystals, Batman! I am SO happy with the machine. After spending substantially more on other brands, I'd say this is probably the best computer purchase I've ever had--and I've been building custom PC's for 12 years.

I have decided not to upgrade the processor yet, though it would be really nice. I want to get comfortable with the machine first and see if I will actually use the extra speed and reduced power consumption. I've been playing with it for less than a day and it has quickly become one of my favorite computers of all time. Now I understand why this forum exists and why everyone here is such a fanatic.

You have a seriously great machine, although from a previous generation of ThinkPads - The T60p's still hold their own in today's PC market - Hence they still command an above average price for mint/excellent examples!

I wonder if someone with this model could do some benchmarking and also someone wiht a W700 with the gig of video ram and the quad core could do the same benchmarking so we could compare directly the difference. If the performance increase is not great I'd just try to find one of these T60Ps.

Are you finding the speed and power working well for your audio work?

Well I guess we can each run the same benchmark because I couldn't wait any longer and ordered the W700ds (refurb). I'll let you know when I get it. Perhaps someone can recommend a benchmarking program that will work accurately for both machines and severely tax the CPU and VIDEO. I know you have a better screen, but mines bigger!??? Hmm,.....I had buyer's remorse 3 days before making the purchase but I couldn't get any answers from anyone as to whether a T60P would cut it, so I'm stuck with a huge PSU and a massive machine. I did find out with a quad core I should be able to have 8 simultaneous transfer functions. I'm actually really excited about it but I wish it was an IPS variant.
