T60 running very slow, both processors sharing 50% idle

Hi all, I have a T60 (2007-BN5) with 3 gig ram, 7200rpm HDD (about 250gig or something) and it's run a treat for three years now, brilliant machine.
It crashed a little earlier, no alt-ctrl-del response so I held down power to restart it. Now, it does this:
Windows takes 4 or 5 minutes to start and the mouse works fine but nothing seems to respond - taskbar, icons, right-click, etc.
After leaving it for another 5 minutes, the taskbar programs load (I have very few, eg. Comodo)
Previously it would take 2 minutes max from startup to ready to go.
HOWEVER, about 5 minutes after I try to start a small program, it often starts - I got task manager up like this and the program (nothing else) seemed fine when it was up and running.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, it showed 50% CPU usage - the left CPU was going up and down and the right CPU was going up and down seemingly in the opposite to the left CPU... equaling a perfect 50%...! That seems really weird.
Looking at System processes, they're all using 0 except System Idle (50) and Task manager (1 sometimes).
It's a dual installation laptop (XP and Vista) both on a partitioned HDD so I have the luxury of trying it with the Vista installation - it works perfectly fine, so I assume the problem is the XP installation or a problem with a part of the HDD that has XP on it.
I've already backed up everything successfully so... tonight I'm going to go through this process:
- Run a virus check through Vista on the XP partition
- If no luck, reinstall XP.
If anyone has some advice or something I should do before losing an evening/morning to reinstalling, please let me know, thanks!
Especially frustrating because I was intending to upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out late October... not happy having to reinstall XP to use for such a short amount of time
