T60 Win XP can't find HD to install. Ubuntu can. Why????

Hello
I had to replace the hard drive because it failed. I purchased and installed an new Western Digital 250GB HD.
I tried to install winXP but it tells me it can't find the hard drive.
The battery failed around the time the HD died, so I have installed a new battery. I don't think this is related to the winXP install problem.
I ran the T60 HD diagnostics and that worked OK.
I installed Ubuntu without any problems.
I partitioned the HD before attempting to install win XP again (I usually install dual boot winXP and Linux).
I have used the winXP disk to install on other machines (I use one disk, multiple legal product codes).
WinXP still can't find the HD. I was running of the AC adapter for all attempts.
Has anyone else hit this problem? Does anyone have a solution?
