t60 motherboard replacement....

My gf's t60 motherboard hit the crapper and she does not want to buy a new computer. She wants to replace the mobo, but I noticed that the T60 also came in a 15 inch version (her's is 14 inch) and a 15.4 inch wide version. I am guessing that I have to look for the 14 inch version of the motherboard? If i am thinking right, the chassis on the 15 inch is bigger, so the 15 inch mobo will be bigger? I would just get the same exact one, but I thought, what the hell....might as well get the one with the dedicated graphics so she can play sims 3 (x1400 is supported by the game). Does that seem feasible? Is there a place where they list most of the motherboard model numbers so i can see what each has?

14" and 15" are the same. There is a little board (interposer) to extend the optical drive connectors. The 15.4" are the same. There are several boards with different graphics options, but they all support SXGA+, assuming your LCD is that type. Some of the boards have different fans and fan mounting. What is the model number of your machine? (like 2007-xxx)

A more powerful graphics card would be wasted on that laptop, it only has a 14.1" XGA screen.
Your original motherboard (or planar) has FRU 42T0157.

I know this is an old thread and I am a newbie on this forum, but I have to replace a MB on my T60. It is an old computer, but I am quite fond of it. Great for surfing while watching TV.
The type is 2623-d7u and the S/N is L3-AEXXX
I saw some on ebay for short money, but I want to get the right one, can anyone please point me in the correct direction? Also, is it difficult to replace the MB on this machine? I am good with tools, but do not like to sodder.

No soldering. You need a good screwdriver and good thermal paste. The service manual gives step-by-step instructions. You currently have an x1400 video chip, which is harder to find than most other ones. There are several equivalent part numbers. My notes (not guaranteed) have these: 44C3971, 42T0296, 42T0163, 41W1456, 42T0122, 41W1368, 41V9920, 44C3979, 41V9920. I usually have one in stock. I can check if you wish, but you might do better if you can find one in Europe, because insured shipping (from San Francisco to Iceland) for a 1kg package costs me $37, which is a lot if the board costs $60. The original Part number is 44C3714 and the Service manual said that the replacement number is 42W2205. However, my question is are all T60 motherboard with ATI GPU compatible? Can I use a motherboard from a T60 14inch or 15inch?

You have a board with ATI x1300 graphics running a core duo 32bit processor. Any of the 14 or 15" T60/T60p boards would work, but if I were you I'd take the opportunity to upgrade.

It is important to note when swapping the Intel video and ATI X1300 video motherboards, whether or not you have (or more importantly, need) the WWAN adapter slot, as there were two varieties of each board, with and without the WWAN slot.

As an FYI, don't confuse WLAN with WWAN! All T60 boards have WLAN slot (for wireless Ethernet a.k.a. wifi connectivity), but only some have the WWAN slot (for Wireless Wide Area Network a.k.a. Verizon mobile broadband, etc.)

Therefore, based on the description of your model (see below), you can use any of the 7 different T60 motherboards. All can drive your high resolution display. If the description from Lenovo is incorrect, meaning that you do have a WWAN adpater (or have added one or would like to add one), then you can select any of the 5 different T60 mobos with the WWAN slot.

Either way, you can go up two levels in graphics performance or down one level. All have heat/performance/battery life trade-offs. Good luck!

(BTW, you have an odd T60p - usually they have the highest end graphics mobos, either the V5200 or V5250, again, assuming the Lenovo website info is correct.)
