Intel T7300 on a T60

I was wondering if a T60 can be run with a Intel T7300 Core 2 Duo CPU .. Does anyone know if that processor runs in the T60?

Looking at your sig, today you probably have an Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2400 (2M Cache, 1.83 GHz, 667 MHz FSB), Sockets Supported PBGA479, PPGA478. The Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7300 has a (4M Cache, 2.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB), Sockets Supported PBGA479, PPGA478. The bus speeds however are different between the (2) processors. For a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU upgrade you would want a T7200. The other caveat is that your current systemboard has to be at revision 3, and you need to load the latest BIOS prior to the upgrade. You can check the board revision with CPU-Z.

Thx quick reply ... I have Rev.3 mainboard so that should be ok. The thing is I have an offer for an used T7300 CPU so that is the reason
I want to know if I can use it. Will the FSB on the T7300 downclock to the FSB of my mainboard (800MHz -> 667MHz) ??

Yes, but the multiplier will be wrong. Your current CPU develops 1.83Ghz from 167Mhz x 11. The T7300 develops 2.0Ghz from 200Mhz x 10. So what would happen if you put the T7300 in your machine is that it would run at 167Mhz x 10 = 1.67Ghz. All this is assuming the CPU is compatible with the board and the architecture is correct for the onboard chipset. I have not looked into chipset compatibility and I have never seen anyone try this, so YMMV.

" Internal frequency of microprocessors is usually based on Front Side Bus frequency. To calculate internal frequency the CPU multiplies bus frequency by certain number, which is called clock multiplier. It's important to note that for calculation the CPU uses actual bus frequency, and not effective bus frequency. To determine actual actual bus frequency for processors that use dual-data rate buses (AMD Athlon and Duron) and quad-data rate buses (all Intel microprocessors starting from Pentium 4) the effective bus speed should be divided by 2 for AMD or 4 for Intel."

Ok see your point now, not very easy to change the FSB cause the Bios doesnt support changes to the chipset. Worth checking though,
have to wait until a used T7200 pops up.

Well thx Harry for help .. Nice weekend ..

AFAIK, T7300 is wrong socket. It won't physically fit.

You want T7200/T7400/T7600.

I'd like to know what is going to happen if a T7300 is installed in a T60 system board.

I am fully aware of the complete list of Intel CPUs which are officially accepted by T60 ... and Rev.3 mainboard and the BIOS support of C2D.

I am just interested in the result of installing T7300 in T60 mentioned in Harryc's post (read the fourth one).

All I can offer is opinion, never having tried it. First the architecture is a match. The T7200 and T7300 are both Mermon CPU's.

We already know the sockets are correct, see above post. We have made mention of the multiplier situation, also above. So my opinion is that while installing a T7300 in a T60 will work, it will boot up to 1.67Ghz instead of it's intended 2.0Ghz.

There is a lot of confusion with Intel's naming scheme.

Bottom line is - Pre-Santa-Rosa CoreDuo/Core2Duo CPUs are Socket M. Santa-Rosa and Montevina CPUs use Socket P.

Both are 478-pins, but they are not compatible.

What about a T7600/500/400 I want to upgrade my cpu so I tought that those seemed really nice, I atm have the T2400 one =/

I believe T7400 and T7600 will work, but T7500 (socket P) will not. I always advise that upgrading the CPU won't be the most efficient way to increase performance, unless you are upgrading a core solo or Celeron to some sort of dual core.

Yes a faster hard drive usually produces a more noticeable performance increase than the CPU.
