t60 Pretty dim screen
I was wondering if the t60 is just a dark looking computer or if I need to install a new inverter? I have had many many thinkpads and this one is the most dim and washed out looking screen I have ever had , I even loaded up my 600 and it looked 10 times brighter.
Let me know caus I will order up an inverter today if I need to

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
T60 screens are known to be washed out and my T60 when it was new wasn't too bright either. so if you get a new inverter it will get brighter a little bit but don't expect it to be the macbook pro.

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
it is such a great computer with such a horrible screen , I really do like this computer but I might have to get rid of it because of the screen alone.
so even with a screen upgrade is this thing still gonna be ugly and dark ?

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
Was it like the other thinkpads? I am wondering if it is just me ! For the past couple of years all the computers I have owned have amazing screens, even my acer one its like 70% brighter than this computer , Right now I am at a Panera Bread and this computer looks terrible Seems like everything I own is brighter , my blackberry set on the lowest setting is better looking than this .
But with all that being said this is one of the best computers I think I have ever used , I love the fingerprint reader (Keeps my wife out my computer) and the keyboard is amazing I have never typed this fast EVER !! but I gotta get this computer situation under control .

the T23 and T60 are very close with their screen brightness. your display might be just old, that's it.

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
Just ordered off Lenovo why do they take so long to ship out kinda ghetto! but question I have changed out a inverter before but never with a T60 is it basically just a click in thing or am I going to have to do some real deal work to get this thing hooked in?
Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
If you haven't done so already, go into BIOS and set the display to use full brightness when on battery.
At least some panels used in T60 ThinkPads were not overly bright even when new. Backlight brightness diminishes over time. You might be able to find a new replacement screen on e-bay.

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
I have had experience with two different T60 14" SXGA+ screens, both of which are 2+ years old, and while they are not the brightest, they are far from being dim and dark. I can work with a few notches below max brightness in most office-lit environments, and in low lighting, maximum brightness is too bright.
Contrast is of course bad, and the vertical viewing angles are terrible, but this is expected from TN panels. One is a Samsung (blueish tint), the other one is a TMD (pinkish tint).

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
I just dont understand why thinkpad would put out such a ugly screen, and it doesnt matter how old the thing is because I have some ancient thinkpads and all of them look so much much better than this crap screen! My wife has a Macbook and she said she has no idea why I love these machines ! and with this quality I am starting to understand her hatred !
PS: Yes I have tried everything in the bios im not a noobie
but I also can tell that its not much the screen that is why I ordered the inverter hope it can bring some new life to this thing

here is what will make you not like apple and like T60 more.fry112 wrote:My wife has a Macbook and she said she has no idea why I love these machines ! and with this quality I am starting to understand her hatred !
1. drop a macbook to the floor and T60
2. spill water on macbook and on T60
3. bang your macbook against two thick chemistry books and a T60.
The screen on a T60 is not as bad, try x300 and you will see what i mean by a bad screen. Apple macbook is great and has a great screen but for me it has no durability, no keyboard and no trackpoint. It is up to you what you can and cannot get used to. There are always the flexview machines which have much better screen than any macbook. So maybe you should sell the T60 and get T60p?

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
Yeah my last flexview was a X41 tablet it did look really nice, But I needed more power. The only reason I started to get interest in thinkpads is the durability, just last night I left my living room and came back in and my 4 year old son was standing on top of my thinkpad! although I know now its the inverter cause sometimes the screen is brighter and other times its darker .

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
If you need pure power then T61 is your machine. I think it has a better screen than T60 but still not as good as T60p flewview but you can put on it 8GB of ram.
Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
Hey fry!
I love the IPS screen you gave me.
If the inverter doesn't solve your issue, you can always upgrade the LCD to a 15" Flexview which will be IPS and should be much better for you.
It's kind of funny and sad because I have know many people (including myself) that have owned laptops with IPS screens and if they move to another machine their first comment is usually about the screen and how dim it seems.
Hope you get it sorted.

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
Is that what that screen was a "IPS" Yeah I might update the screen to a flexview haven't decided yet I think any move between laptops is usually difficult I swear one of th best screens I have ever owned is on my Acer 10inch netbook That thing is bright and crisp I have also noticed that entertainment laptop screen just triump over any thinkpad screen. But I will tell you one thing this laptop is a true powerhouse and its my first with a fingerprint reader and I actually love it ! .
But yeah I will probably have to upgrade the screen if the inverter doesn't brighten it up a notch I seriously hope Lenovo did not make this computer this dark
I should be getting my inverter today or tommorow so I will let you know if it brightens this baby up!!

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
Ok installed the inverter and all of the corners of the screen and all around brightness look about 10 times better! although the colors are still washed out, So I am thinking here in December I will upgrade the screen! Question though? when I do the screen update will the screen colors look better and will the laptop be brighter?
Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
If you upgrade the LCD to an IPS model you will gain SGXA+ and it should be just as bright as the screen on the X41T you shipped me.
I had planned to upgrade the LCD but held off because I needed the money for other things. If you do upgrade it, make sure to take before and after pics.
Other than that, how is the machine running for you?

Don't forget that it can only be done if his T60 is 15". Otherwise, he'd have to "upgrade" the entire machine.Temetka wrote:If you upgrade the LCD to an IPS model you will gain SGXA+

Yes its a 15in, also how difficult is it to replace a screen on these things ? and yes the computer is perfect that is the reason I am upgrading this thing, I also love how easy it is to crack this thing open.

Since it's my old T60 I am pretty sure I know what hardware he has.

If you just buy the bare LCD you will have to crack open the display housing which is very easy to do.
You can also purchase the LCD already mounted in a housing then all you do is remove the whole top section of the machine, screw in the new LCD and hook up your cables and your done.
Honestly if I were you i'd get the LCD by itself. Were talking maybe 15 minutes of extra work to remove the LCD from it's housing and install the new one.

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
Crack open the display as in the casing? I had to open up the casing to install the new inverter, I also took a look behind the screen and I saw a couple of things connected to the screen from behind, now will that be pretty easy to take out and put in new one ?
I am also looked on ebay and T60 screens are everywhere but who do you know to trust?

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
Yeah.
The upper part of the laptop. I.E. the part that holds the LCD and that connects to the base via hinges.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62733
That link is to the hardware maintenance manual. It should be able to walk you through the relevent steps.
As for sellers on e-bay? I look for sellers with hundreds of positive feedback and at least 1 year of presence. Other than that I would post a WTB ad in the marketplace.

Re: t60 Pretty dim screen
That's a good question. You can search by the Lenovo part number, but that will likely only get you compatible screens. Meaning they'll fit and work, but are not ips screens. Unless they specifically state they're IPS or FFS I would assume they are not.fry112 wrote:I am also looked on ebay and T60 screens are everywhere but who do you know to trust?

Looking on eBay right now it seems like there's not much there. You might want to post over in the marketplace forum to see if anyone's got one they're selling.
