WD or Seagate

I would like to upgrade the HDD of my T61. Some members of this forum advised to go for Hitachi Travelstar 7K320, however they are out of stock in my vicinity. So I am stuck with WD Scorpio Black and Seagate Momentus 7200.4.
Which of them would be best for my machine? An what model supports ThinkVantage Active Protection?

I'd vote for Seagate, but that's me...

I just bought a Scorpio Black and I can attest it vibrates more than any other drive I have had. I would not recommend it, although it has a nice 5 year warranty. The vibration is common complaint. I have put mine into an external case for backup use, where the vibration is not an issue. I have had good luck with Hitachi, but no recent experience with Seagate. I have a couple of Fujitsu but have had to return 3x for warranty swap.

AGREE! The couple of WD Scorpio Black 320GB's I have in an external USB closure really do vibrate their enclosure's - Although the WD Scorpio Black 250GB installed in a clients T60 does not vibrate what so ever!
As per forum member
ajkula66, I also recommend the
Seagate's (7200.4) - they run very quiet and fairly cool - So far no prob's -

Well, I installed my new Seagate Momentus 7200.4 / S ATA / 320GB. It seems to be a bit louder than my original Fujitsu and the perforamce gain is not impressive. To be frang I barely notice any difference. However, now I have twice as more space. So far so good.

Quality control is certainly an issue here. My wife and I each have T61's that came with Seagate 7K160 hard drives. We have each had 2 replacements under warranty as the drives either failed or became very noisy. Lenovo/IBM finally sent us Hitachi drives the last time and they are working fine but noticeably slower. I recently installed a WD Skorpio Black and have noticed an increase in speed and no heat or vibration issues yet.

FYI:
I just swapped my stock 7200.1 for a 7200.4 500gig. I'm very pleased with the new Segate, and the 500gig is actually quieter than the original 100gig stock.
I figured that I'd post since I had been browsing the forums the last few days to see what HD brand I would go with. I almost went with the WD, but because I could get the Seagate overnighted on a Saturday via amazon prime, I went with the Segate.
Thanks

In my case it seems that I am lucky so far. The drive is no particulary nosiy although it makes more noise than the original Fujistsu I had. But again Fulitsu was 5400 RPM. No particular problems with vibrations (In fact, I bought Seagate as I was scared off WD due to complains about vibrations. It seems that there is nothing wrong with temperature - it's about 35 degrees C; the same as my slower stock Fujitsu. The only thing that concerns me that there is no considerable gain in terms of speed. It seems that my Fujitsu were as fast is this supposedly faster Seagate drive.

After decades of being a Seagate fan I've got to say I'm outright afraid of them now and suspect a major QC problem. My Momentus 500GB drive arrived DOA. It would spin up but not format, too may errors. Replaced 3x over the course of A MONTH and it took that long despite their extra-cost 48-hour advance replacement program, before they shipped a drive that would pass muster and could be formatted. They couldn't even authorize an overnight shipment on the fourth pass, when I told them that I expected something faster after three weeks of shipments taking a week each time.
It makes me wonder if they've been operating too lean too long, and trouble might be to come.

I won't suggest you to get a Seagate drive.
I was given a replacement drive after I complained to the online seller from whom I got the drive that the Seagate Momentus 500GB 5400.6 HDD I received was clicking like nuts [
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=82477]. The said clicking sounds still don't go away with the new HDD in tow.
P.S. I read in a forum that the reason why the clicking was evident in a laptop's HDD bay was that the laptop (in my case, a T61) was not supplying that enough electricity to the drive, hence the loud, clicking (and sometimes) knocking sound. Would anyone confirm this statement? [

I would vote for Western Digital, never had any problems with that brand.
I had a Seagate 1.5TB 3.5" in my desktop PC, and it annoyed me very much. It was noisy, vibrated a lot (my PC case and external casing were resonating ) and it got very hot (55C).
Now i got a WD10EADS in my desktop PC, and all the things that irritated me are gone. It runs a lot cooler, is very silent and it vibrates less.
I think the quality check on WD drives is much better.
But hey, this is just my opinion

Whats the suggestion / consensus now?
640GB / 500 GB
or some upcoming new
750GB / 1 TB?
So far the Scorpio Blue seems the favorite - here & newegg? Hows the Hitachi Travelstar?
