Windows 7 and T60 Running Hot

Hello,

I recently installed Windows 7 (Release) and installed the Latest PowerManager, but ever since the install the T60 is running much hotter than
before. The T60 positioned on my lap is not pleasant at all, actually burning my lap.

Things I have tried:

1) Upgraded the Bios. (Set the BIOS to Defaults)

2) Replaced the Microsoft supplied Video Driver( ATI X1400) with the one posted at Lenovo.
Tried an older ATI Driver since the Latest one at Lenovo does not include or does not install the "PowerPlay" (CCC).

3) I have created my own powerplan and set the plan such that the "Temperature" is die lowest.

I am actually wondering if there is a download for an Older PowerManger, the one with the "Thinkpad Default" power plan.

Any help welcome.

Install and run coretemp and post your idle CPU temperatures and idle CPU load percentage.

You can also use RightMark CPU Clock Utility (RMClock) and turn down the speed of the CPU.

I have also pinned it down a bit, it is not W7 since i tried XP (separate drive) and it also runs hot.

Ok, in coretemp towards the bottom is a box called 'Load' , What percentage is listed for each core? By the way, the CPU temps are normal. In fact the T60 I am typing this on (running Windows 7) has almost identical temperatures to yours.

Ok (that is with my browser open), if I close it, it drops to 2 / 4 % cpu usage.

I have felt the bottom of the T60, the hotest part is not the cpu, but in the center of the laptop, more towards the cpu.
Could it be the GPU.

need a core Temp for ATI X1400 I guess.

58-65C is about where my X1400 idled, so if it's doing that on idle you shouldn't have much of a problem. ATI cards just run a bit hot in a T6x, especially if you have the T60p with the FireGL. Otherwise your idle temps are fine.

What I'm thinking is that maybe since you instaled Win 7 fresh, it is grabbing updates and doing its hardware indexing rigmarole? I have no experience with Win 7, but I notice that on a new Vista installation... the machine just works pretty hard for the first few days or so to do all the indexing/updating/etc that it does. I notice that resource utilization drops off after a while, once things 'settle down,' so to speak.

I was running Win7 RC1 until last week in my T61 (integrated GPU) and I've noticed that for many months having Win7 in my laptop, my T61 was running quite hot to the touch, especially the palmrest area (right side after the touchpad; the whole area under the palmrest right beneath the touchpad).

What I did was to fire up my recovery disks gathering dust for more than a year already and have a factory reinstall of Vista.

And it did wonders.

Surely, I miss the very-much improved GUI experience with Win7. But given its rather pricey treatment here in Manila, not to mention the heat it made my T61 generate, I'm more than happy to be back in Vista.

Perhaps I'll just get my Win7 back when I decide to buy a new ThinkPad again.

Here someone with the same problem.
I fried my cpu so i replaced it by a duo 2 core.

If I have info I will add it.

But you are not the only one.
I set power option in de bios to energy saver on battery and powercord.

And after installing a 64-bit version my heating problems are reduced a little.

Im now using my HP 6710b and alsoo that one is getting hot with windows 7.

To the moderators,

Do you think the issue here is having an old TP with old parts in it?

I was thinking that maybe the TPs were hot like pancakes because of the old-generation parts that may not be "compatible" with running Windows 7. Though these laptops may run Win7 like any other brand new laptops, I feel that running Windows 7 without having any heat issues can only be achieved with newer-generation laptops.

What do you think?

Some more info, my T60 is a bit cooler.

I have recently also upgraded my BIOS to the Latest version ( Windows 7 Computability ),

I have set the BIOS to Load Defaults, and notice that the Thermal Control is set to Maximum performance; I am not sure
what the correct value is or was
. Maybe someone can help out here (one that has a Cold T60).

I did make the change to "Balanced" and set the IBM power Control slider one notch down.
I noticed that the Slider adjusts the ATI Catalyst Control Center Power Play.

When the IBM power manager slider is on Max, then ATI CCC sets the PowerPlay to Maximum,
By setting the Slider one notch down the Power Play setting is set to Balanced.

I am not sure if the Bios Thermal control plays a role, it is currently set to "Balanced".
