Wifi a/b/g to a/b/g/n- third antenna
Wifi a/b/g to a/b/g/n- third antenna
Is this even a possible upgrade since it seems that the 'n' card uses a third antenna? I've got the Intel 3945 card at the moment and it's only got two.
Re: Wifi a/b/g to a/b/g/n- third antenna
It is possible if you have the right parts. What is the exact machine type/model of this machine? It can be seen on the bottom sticker and will be a (7) digit alpha-numeric .e.g. 2347-3CU.

I've got two machines at the moment. One will get sold.

I have asked about the 3rd antenna myself. Apparently you don't really need it unless you want to get on a newer WiFi router at 450Mbps. 2 antennas will get you 300Mbps or something.
From what I can tell, you stick it up with the WAN antenna in the bulge on the side of the screen, or replace the WAN antenna or something. I ordered one on eBay that I am still waiting for, so I'll try to remember to post details when I get it.

Re: Wifi a/b/g to a/b/g/n- third antenna
Wait, so you're saying you can use the WAN antenna? It doesn't really matter too much since the router I'm looking at only does 300mbps.
Fwiw, my T60 has the Verizon Sierra card and it only has one antenna. The T60p I've got has the Sierra Cingular card and that's got two wires going to the card, both are presumably antenna's.
What exactly have you ordered, just the mini pci card? The impression I've gotten from looking around is that all you can get is this the card, you either have the third wifi antenna or you don't.

Re: Wifi a/b/g to a/b/g/n- third antenna
The Intel 5100 is an N card that only uses two antennas (I think that the 5300 uses three), so you can still get speeds of 300mbps.
I'm planning on purchasing this card and also fitting (well...attempt to fit) the MC8775 WWAN card under the keyboard which only uses one antenna.
When I actually DO get a t60p that is...
@Harry C: Are there only some models that can be fitted with N/WWAN/Sim slots? Is that the reason for asking about the model numbers?

I'm under the impression that you can only use the Lenovo cards, which means Atheros agbn for the T60/61.
Re: Wifi a/b/g to a/b/g/n- third antenna
Looking at the parts diagram is confusing. #2 is listed as the WAN antenna as well as the third LAN antenna. Does this mean they were mutually exclusive from the factory?bmwman91 wrote:I have asked about the 3rd antenna myself. Re: Wifi a/b/g to a/b/g/n- third antenna
Would the same card work on a 2007-BT6 and a 1951-CTO? If not what card or cards would I need? If so this is more interesting than buying an external card, but my next question is has anyone found a good wireless N wap/router that works well with the card?
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

The Intel ABGN cards wont work in the T60s unless you do Zender's BIOS hack. Forwarned, you can kill your system doing BIOS flashing (especially with hacked BIOSes) but i can say i've done it no less than 5 times already with no issues. Lots of other people here tested them and it worked great.
YOu can however use the Atheros cards that are called "Thinkpad Wireless ABGN" cards from Lenovo. Those will work without any hacking.
On my T60 i got a antenna from ebay and routed it up behind the LCD and just taped it there. Worked great, got swee speeds when copying files over wifi from a LAN PC. I could finally stream 720P MKVs from my server without any issues.

But, in practice, at significantly lower distances from an access point compared to a 802.11n device which has three antennas.Worzyl wrote:The Intel 5100 is an N card that only uses two antennas (I think that the 5300 uses three), so you can still get speeds of 300mbps.
I put one under the palm rest on my T60, and as long as its under a part of the palm rest that you don't regularly rest your hand on, it also works fine.SHoTTa35 wrote:On my T60 i got a antenna from ebay and routed it up behind the LCD and just taped it there

Thanks, im going to do a little more research on the wireless N stuff, but this is looking viable.
