T61p Windows 7 Unknown Device

#1 Post by jdhurst » Wed Nov 25, 2009 6:51 pm

I have a new installation of Windows 7 on a 500Gb drive in my T61p Ultra-Bay. Unlike my Vista PreLoad, the Windows 7 is an ugly "clean install" where I have to quintuple my workload by installing all the drivers myself.

I am left with one unknown device under Other in Device Manager. It thinks it is a Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller. But I do not know what. I installed network devices (and they are working - I am here now), audio, video, Access Connections, Hotkey, Hard Drive Protection, and Chipset Support.

What do you think this device might be? And what driver might I install?

Thank you, ... JDH

Install System Update 4.0 and it will take care of this driver nonsense for you.

Make a copy of your Vista Driver Store folder to a USB drive (two gig or so in size) and then point the Device Manager updater to that folder. Good chance the "unknown" will be the IR driver, and it will be installed just fine. (gee, who uses IR to transfer files anymore anyhow?)

Thank you Harry.

As a long time user and member of this forum, I should have used System Update to see what was missing. It was one of the System Interface Driver or the Power Management Driver. I did those 2 plus the Power Manager, and all the Devices are now correctly installed.

Since Windows 7 is Vista SP3 plus some unfortunate GUI downgrades, I basically have the machine running after 24 hours. Much farther ahead than Vista previously, and that is because I have spent the past 18 months with Vista and know my way around it.
