Clean Flush - new HD, new Windows 7...a fresh start

#1 Post by Bfskinnerpunk » Tue Dec 01, 2009 6:31 pm

I'm thinking of doing a full flush of stuff on my T61.

I'd like to get a 500gig HD, 4gigs of ram, and upgrade from XP to Windows 7 all at the same time.

With that in mind, can I just install the hard drive out of the box.... without cloning... turn on the computer .... put the Windows 7 install CD in and start from scratch like that?

Thanks,
Kelton

BFskinnerpunk,

You will need to have Microsoft Windows XP installed to validate the upgrade and activate the product key. Please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually.

totally wrong answer above, not needed in answer to the original posters question which made no mention of a need to do an upgrade install.

you *CAN* start fresh over from a hard drive out of the box...without cloning and when you turn on computer boot from the install CD and it will auto-configure itself.

works fine, have done several this way
