How to turn off USB power in sleep mode?

#1 Post by jgrobertson » Sat Dec 26, 2009 2:31 pm

Running W7 64 ultimate on T60P. When I shut the lid the fan on the usb powered Belkin lap protector keep running. On my old T20 it shuts off.

I have check all of the settings in the Device Manager for the USB hubs and they are all set to allow the OS to control power. Also I have set the mouse to NOT cause a resume from sleep (have to re-do that anytime MS installs an update).

Seems that there should be a way to cause the USB devices to be powered off totally when the laptop sleeps.

At the risk of stating the obvious, are you sure that the laptop is properly set to go to sleep (S3, suspend) on lid close?

Go to Power Options and then click the profile you are using - change setting. After that go to "USB Settings" and turn Selective suspend to Disabled.

It is selective suspend in that if you don't have anything plugged in while the machine is going to sleep it will turn off the USB ports, if something is actively using it, the ports will be left on.

This is a feature of Windows Vista and 7 as well as newer laptops. It's for the times when you want to use your laptop to charge your phone or something like that while it's sleeping. I've done that plenty of times during long trips to Florida or something. My laptop will have about 20% left but it will be enough to charge my phone to 100% :)
