Power cord keeps breaking
Power cord keeps breaking
Hi,
I am just writing a quick post to see if anyone is having the same issue. My T60p is great. Only the problem is the power cord keeps splitting on the actual plug that goes into the Thinkpad. It splits just where the plug starts to cover the wire. This is the second time I have had one split in exactly the same place. I mean it would suggest to me some sort of manufacturing issue.
Unfortunately, my T60p is out of its warranty. That, and the fact the DVD drive no longer reads DVDs and and a new battery is required (ie £300 or so) I think I may give in and get another machine.
Is anyone else getting the same issue ?
Regards
Stu

You need to do some homework on the parts prices, for £300 you can buy a complete used T60!

I personally haven't had this failure mode. But just curious: is this something you can cure, meaning prevent further stress and possible breakage of the actual wire, with an couple cm. of appropriate-diameter heatshrink tubing over the plug and wire?
Or has it already caused an open circuit?

The current power supply is absolutely done for. It is a good idea though thanks!
And in the meantime I stripped down and rebuilt the machine, cleaning out the vents etc and the CPUs sit idle at 43 degrees C. It works if you hold the power supply a certain way, but a new one is a must.

Maybe you should move your laptop a bit to the left (or get an extension cord).StueyB wrote:... the problem is the power cord keeps splitting on the actual plug that goes into the Thinkpad. It splits just where the plug starts to cover the wire...
You seem to have permanent stress on the cable...
Alternatively, get a port replicator, and connect your adapter to that, so the cable stays stationary.

Hiya.
Thanks for that thought re: stress points. Got to confess had never really thought about it being due to stress on the cable!
I may try some heat shrink stuff on it to see if it will last longer.
On the positive side, I have just checked my warrenty so all these parts bar the battery are covered. I didn't realise my warrenty was still going!
Happy days and thanks to everyone.
