Fingerprint reader problem (XP)

I have a (IBM) T60 running XP Pro.

A few months ago, the fingerprint scanner stopped working on startup. It would recognize the fingerprint scanning but it wouldn't follow through and even really read it if that make sense. Anyway, it wouldn't let me in with the fingerprint scanner. More recently, it wouldn't respond at all to a swipe.

Now, when I go to the ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software it gives an error:

"Code: 0xe72c00007

Description: rnpipe: svr(00000000fusserver) not found"

Is there software I can download for XP?

I had this problem occur when 5.8.4.5476 version of the fingerprint software was added through the updater. The driver was also probably updated. I rolled back the driver, powered off, rebooted and all is well. The driver I now am using is from Jan 30 of 2008. The one I replaced was later than that.

This is what I have as far as driver:

Provider: UPEK
Date: 11/15/2005
Version: 1.8.1.55

I'm not sure if it's a software or driver problem.

Should I get new software?

I've got a bigger problem now. For some reason the sensor is detecting me scanning my finger on it even when I'm not touching it. It results in it not detecting my finger and getting bad results. Now I think it might be a hardware problem.
