Yesterday, I was at my T60 when up popped a 'Windows has been updated... do you want to restert now or later' window. I said later since I was n the middle of doing something.

A bit later I got up to get some coffee and when I retrned the 'puter had rebooted and was sittng on the 'safe mode or load windows normally' screen. I presume the Windows update 'updated' & rebooted in my absence.

Anyway, when I selected 'Boot windows normally' I get the initial windows progress bar then a Blue Screen of Death' (BSOD) then it reboots back to the 'Safe Mode' Screen. So I try 'Safe ode'. A couple doz files load then it hangs. I reboot, this time trying 'previous known good cofiguration'. Again a BSOD and back t the safe mode screen. No 'permutation' I try will get me into Windows XP.xp

I borrowed an XP install disk and tried repairing. No joy. I finally just installed a clean version of windows in a different folder (WINNEW). Now I essentialy have a dual boot system with 2 instances of XP.

If I boot under the new windows everything is fine. In fact I can even go into the old Windows folder and see all my apps, data, etc.. OF course nothing works but they're awinll intact which leads me to believe that A) I do not have a H/W problem and b) The Windows udate trashed my Win XP.

Myquestion is, (stupid me) I did not create /not have a rescue & recovery disk. If I download R&R from Lenovo can I restore my original WinXP?

It would help to know what the BSOD says...

When you boot your original Windows after a crash, there should be an option in the boot menu to disable automatic system restart on crash. This should give you time to read the blue screen, which may help diagnose the problem.

How about XP system restore to a date before the update? They usually make a restore point before any updates.

It doesn't give any (to me) usable info other than it could be drivers, etc.

The 'specific' error reporting is just saying wondows stopped at a memory location. If that is decodable by someone I could certainly copy it down and report it.

True, but that ability pressuposes you can boot into windows to gain access to the backup/restore point.

If you know a way to do that via repair cnsole, etc. I'd be all ears

What is frustrating is I can go to the 'old' winXP and see the recovery/restore S/W (and restore OS, etc.) but it won't operate from the 'new' windows instal.

p.s. sorry about the typos.. I'm borrowing one of those lil netbook thngies and the keyboard is at best 3/4 size

Are you sure this was a genuine Microsoft Windows Update and not a virus or trojan? Best option, I think, it to an early Window Restore point or, if that doesn't work (and in my experience, it rarely does), a clean re-install.

There is actually an update for Windows XP that is causing a good number of BSOD errors.

Most likely not a T60 (or Thinkpad in general) related error. If it happens after an update, it's a very safe bet it was one of the updates that caused it.

Here is a direct link to instructions on how to uninstall the patch that causes the BSOD. The instructions are in the thread's second post. Heise online UK's instructions are similar.

Like a Phoenix from the ashes, the R&R I downloaded from Lenovo resurrected my T60!

I had no idea what to expect (I thought my XP was toast) but it even gave me the option of restoring all my apps. I decided to do a clean XP 'like from the factory' install instead. I had too many never used apps installed anyway.

Dang, now I gotta go to church on Sundays.

Interesting. I believe this is exactly what happened to me.

I knew it had to be due to the auto update (which I normally have turned off (?)). OTOH, that a MS XP update could/would trash my OS just didn't make sense.
