T60 or T61?? What should i do??

#1 Post by Cyberstudio » Thu Mar 04, 2010 2:15 pm

Hi guys. I have a T60, and today i got a T61. I have to sell one of them but... which one?? these are the specs:

T60
Code 2 Duo T5500 @ 1.6
2gb Ram
320GB hard disk (Scorpio black)
No bluetooth
Fingerprint
Widescreen 15.4 (1680x1050)
Motherboard revision 3
DVD Burner UJ-842
6 cell battery
Wifi 3945 ABG
1.7 year warranty
Intel integrated graphics

T61
Core 2 duo T7300 @ 2.0
2gb Ram
120GB hard disk (Seagate)
No bluetooth
Fingerprint
Widescreen 14.?? (1440x900)
Motherboard revision C0
DVD Burner UJ-862
9 Cell battery
Wifi 4965AGN
Webcam
No Warranty

The 2 machines are in mint condition, like new.

Im worried about the T61 and the nvidia issue, so im very tempted to stay with the T60 and sell the T61. In that case, i will do this:

Swap processors (Move the T7300 to the T60, and the T5500 to the T61) and dvd burners

OR if the best option is to stay with the T61, then i will only move the T60 hard disk (Scorpio black 320) to the T61 and sell the T60

The 2 machines run very cool, but the T60 runs cooler.

What should i do?

Sizewise I think the T61 is a lot more portable.
The T61 can take more RAM (up to 8GB) and run a 64-bit OS without any problems.
The T60 has 15" wSXGA+, the T61 has 14" wXGA+, you need to make up your mind what LCD size/resolution you prefer.
I'd sell both and if you prefer 14", get a T410, and if you prefer 15", get a T510 or W510.

Unfortunately, this won't work. The T60 and T61 use different different CPU sockets and the CPUs do not overlap. The T60 uses a socket M and the T61 uses a socket P.

If I had to pick one, it'd be the T60, unless weight was the primary issue. Of course selling both and buying a W500 is an option, too.

OMG!! That's 100% sure?? :? My T60 has a very modern board (I think is the last revision)

any way, i can't sell both laptops. I need to keep one. Weight is not an issue right now.

The nvidia problem is a deal breaker issue? is that problematic? like the T4X gpu problem?

Your T60 with integrated Intel graphics is a lot more stable than the T61 with nVidia.
Sooner or later, that nVidia chip is going to bite you in your a$$.
Maximize RAM in the T60, swap the DVD burners and the wifi-cards (if this throws up an 1802 error in the T60, you need a modified BIOS, available on this website http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=55837 ).
If you feel the urge, you can always update the CPU to a C2D T7200/T7400/T7600.
And start selling the T61.

Thanks a lot. Will do that.

The Wifi card on the T61 has 3 antennas, but the T60 has only 2. Can i install the T61 card on the T60 without using the third antenna? (I know that i have to install another bios)

I can get the third antenna from the T61 but i don't want to disassemble the LCD

The N-part of the wifi prefers to have 3 antennas, but it will work more than good enough with 2 antennas.
You'll never get the potential speed of 300MBits N anyway, and even 120MBits is still way better than (potential) 54MBits from the G.
Thing is, your ISP doesn't give you more than maybe 10MBits, it's only between router/laptop or laptop/laptop where you realize some form of N-speed.

Thanks for your answer.

I sold the T61 to my girlfriend. That T61 will be replacing a T43 (mine sometime ago.... miss you) and will be used like a desktop replacement. Light use, just for office and web. No games, no dvd movies, nothing. will be sitting on a desktop all day, she will only use it for about 5 hours a day or less.

Under that kind of use, and taking into account that the machine is just like 2 months of use, can i expect it to last at least two years without the GPU issue?

Your English is perfectly fine, don't worry.
Netzspannung is just a little sarcastic...
And as long as you keep that T61 mostly stationary (i.e. sitting on the desk), there should be little to worry about the GPU.
Your G/F got a bargain there!
