Cpu temperature and fan operations

Hello all,

I apologize if this has been covered on the forum but there is so much information on fan noise it is a bit overwhelming. I am new to T60's having owned t21's and t42's over the years and notice the fan runs a lot more or maybe it is just noisier and I never noticed it on the other units. Is this to be expected or is there really a cooling issue?

Anyway I installed TPfan control and noticed idle temperatures at about 57-62C for the CPU with the fan cycling on and off every 20 seconds or so and then other times it just stays on (right now it is running about 2900 rpm and not shutting off). I tried it in the BIOS and Smart mode and the fan still runs a lot. Just for interest I installed a couple of other CPU temperature monitoring programs to get some temperature trends. They originally seemed to have the same temperature as TPfan but they both now seem to read considerably higher temperatures than TPfan. The programs are Core Temp and Sensor Views and now they both say 80C when TP fan says 62C. What is that about?

I would appreciate any insight and wondering if I should have the unit looked at as it is still under warranty.

Thanks,

Bruce

A couple of things here...since these temperatures are higher than what I'd like to see...

a) Clean the fan with compressed air

b) Check whether you have processes running that are hogging the CPU usage

T60 fans are known to be failure-prone, but I'd check those points before sending the machine in.

Good luck.

I downloaded "hardware sensor monitor" and now I see why the temperatures are so different. the hotter temps are the two core temperatures and the lower number is the CPU temperature. So, I assume there are three different sensors on the CPU. It sounds like they are all a bit higher than recommended. I think I will take the machine apart and see what I can see probably adding Acrtic 5 paste for better heat transfer.

BTW, what's your GPU temperature? I have the same ATI X1300 in mine and while browsing, texting and other less intensive tasks GPU always takes the lead temperature-wise. 57-62 while the proc. is at 48-55. I plan on doing the copper mod someday.

The GPU temperatures run pretty close to the CPU temps, both hot. BTW all this information was based on operating on AC.

When I went to battery on the power source optimized settings the CPU is running at 50C / GPU +-1C with no fan on. When the fan comes on it goes down to 45C.
