HELP WITH DEVICE DRIVERS [SOLVED]

I've did a fresh XP 32bit install and I not not sure what drivers I need to resolve:
Base System Device
SM Bus Controller
Unknown Device (on PCI standard ISA bridge)

I have not been able to update the drivers for the SATA drive.

I'd appreciate any ideas.
Thanks

You need the Intel Chipset drivers

Intel recommends that the Intel Chipset Device Software be installed onto the target system prior to installation of other drivers. I ignored this recommendation once, and i suppose it ruined my hard drive. It didn't die immediately, but after a few weeks.

Also install the Lenovo System Interface Driver.

too late to install the Intel Chipset drivers.
How did yo find this out?

Would you recommend a full re-install of XP?

I am still having trouble installing the "Base System" drivers from the ibm web site.

thanks for the help.

You should use the Intel Chipset Device Software for the T61.

I suggest you tell us next time for what TYPE laptop you need advice.
Put your type in your signature, like: T61 7663-14U
That way we can avoid wrong advise...

It says so under point 7 of (2) System Requirements in the Readme file on Intel's site. The Readme that i linked to is for a newer version, but the recommendation about installation order has been the same for all versions that i've seen for more than ten years.
Would you recommend a full re-install of XP?
If you have a hidden service partition on your current drive and it contains an OS you want to use, i'd recommend to restore the system from that service partition. If you have burned recovery media for the OS you want to use, i'd recommend to restore the system from them. If you have no recovery media, burn recovery media before proceeding, even if it means restoring the system from the hidden service partition, installing ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery and then burning recovery media.

If you don't have or don't want to use recovery media and don't want to or cannot restore the system from a hidden service partition, i'd recommend to format the XP partition and then re-install the OS. I have no idea whether you'll be able to access a hidden service partition or the Rescue and Recovery Workspace after having formatted the XP partition. That's why i recommend to burn recovery media first. If you want to use the SATA hard drive in AHCI mode, you might need a USB diskette drive with the AHCI driver in order to be able to install XP.
I am still having trouble installing the "Base System" drivers from the ibm web site.
I can't find a "Base System" driver on the site that you linked to. What do you mean by "Base System" driver?

What I meant to type was "Base System Device".

I'll need to re-install XP. I did not make a hidden partition. I'm not sure how to boot from a USB device (floppy) and install XP so I can use the SATA drive in the AHCI mode.
Looks like I have some homework to do.

thanks for your help!

Can you recommend a way to download or create a boot CD or floppy with SATA drivers to use in the AHCI mode please.

Hello cwc,

you said that you didn't make a hidden partition. The hidden partition isn't something you make yourself, Lenovo installs the hidden partition when manufacturing the notebook. Why are you installing XP? If it is because you had Vista on the disk but found it to be too slow, there are means to speed up Vista. Is the hard disk, that you're about to install XP on, the original hard disk that came with the notebook? If it is, you should be able to restore the hard disk to the state it was in when the notebook left the factory - you don't have to install an OS and all the drivers manually. When restoring the hard disk to factory content, the notebook uses the hidden service partition. If you want to restore the hard disk to factory content, press the blue ThinkVantage button as soon as you see the first screen, that informs you that you can press the blue ThinkVantage button, directly after turning on power. You are then given the choice to restore to factory content. Restoring to factory content can take up to two or three hours from what i remember.

The original hard drive failed. I'm using XP because that is the only legal copy of windows I have.
I formatted the drive NTFS with the XP install then installed sp2 and sp3.
If I buy another version of windows it will be 7.
thanks

Hello cwc,
the ThinkVantage Access Help User Guide contains detailed information on how to install Windows XP and all precautions that are necessary to install with AHCI mode on. It also gives instructions on how to proceed if you don't want to use a diskette drive. You can download the Access Help User Guide from Lenovo's support site. It tells you that you'll need the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver. You can get that from Intel as well as from Lenovo.

Edit: adjusted the Intel URL to link to Intel's English web page.

This is the XP installation document for the T60. The same procedures apply for the T61 regarding XP installation with Dual Core and SATA controllers.

I think I'd like to try to boot from a USB floopy with the Serial ATA (SATA). AHCL.
Can I do this without the following?
Copy the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver from C:\IBMTOOLS\DRIVERS\IMSM or C:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERS\IMSM to a diskette.

Or what tools from IBMTOOLS do I need to Successfully install the "Base System Device" drivers?

The "Intel Chipset Device Software" or "Intel Chipset Support", as Lenovo calls it, will install the drivers for what's now "Base System Devices".

I feel really stupid.
the only intel drrivers I can find are:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 818#DOCTOP

Intel Chipset Support for Windows Vista, XP, 2000 - ThinkPad Reserve Edition, R61, R61e, R61i, T61, T61p, X61, X61s, X61 Tablet, X300

and that was the first thing I installed after I installed XP.

Download Lenovo System Update, and it will get you all the drivers you need.

Sorry, i thought that "Base System Device" would be some part of the chipset, but when thinking again, i suppose it could be anything. The installation instructions that ashleys linked to are not correct for the T61, as they say that you should select the Intel 82801 GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M). The T61, however, uses the Intel® 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8-E/M).

If you downloaded the Access Help User Guide, you probably read that Lenovo recommends installing SP2 for Windows XP directly after installing Windows XP, and to install the Intel Chipset Device Software after that.

Dr_st is right, ThinkVantage System Update will tell you what drivers need to be installed. I haven't used System Update much, so i'm not absolutely certain that it will install the drivers and applications in the correct order.

Solved the problem using the ATMEL and the Ricoh drivers.
All is good now. I also got the SATA controller to go after the XP install.
I learned a lot from you all!
Thank you so much for your help.
