Problems making recovery disks

#1 Post by xatlas0 » Fri Mar 19, 2010 11:45 am

Gentlemen-

I have been lurking for the last few months when I decided to get back into a Thinkpad after slumming it with a Dell Latitude 610 for a few years. My first was a T20, then a T42 (curse you mobo solder!), and now, using this board as a reference, I have a UXGA T60p 2007-93U. I have already had to replace the display inverter, which was a quick job thanks to this board, and a few days ago, my computer began behaving oddly. I used to do consumer-grade IT work for extra cash as a teenager, so I managed to fix that issue, which ended up being bad sectors on the disk. The disk is the standard 200GB Fujitsu unit.

Anyway, after that scare, I wanted to pull off the recovery media. Unfortunately, the tool that does this is continually having an error. The program can make neither the boot disk or the recovery media, and it gives the same error both times. The program halts during the "Premastering" phase and says there was an error during writing. It also has the same error if I connect an external drive instead of a CD.

Now, since I fixed the bad sectors, I know pretty much all the data on the disk could potentially be compromised. To that end, I wanted to try and re-download the media creation program, but I did not see it anywhere on Lenovo's website. To that end, I wanted to know if I am stuck buying a set of disks or if there is a way I can salvage this? I have already ghosted and imaged the drive, so I am not particularly worried about my data at this point.

And foremost: buy a new hard disk from the likes of Newegg or Zipzoomfly etc.

The drive itself seems to be stable. Based on other experiences with bad-sector disks, if they don't come back, the drive itself is ok for now. That said, I have the drive ghosted on a 160 GB Seagate Momentus, so I can sub it in whenever. A SSD is in the works at a later date. So far, the disk hasn't had any bad sector issues since the initial.

I asked because I hoped that Lenovo had a tool you could use to verify and fix your recovery partition. If they had that, then I could likely make the disks I want, rather than buying them, but oh well.

As for the intro to my post, "Ladies and gentlemen" sounded too theatrical, "people" sounds too impersonal, "Hey" seems kind of flippant... and so on. 'Twas certainly not my intention to offend, but the greeting I wrote seemed to be a reasonable compromise between gender tact, politeness, and length. If it bothers anyone that much, I can change it.
