usb wireless mouse. Pointer wont move, no response

Hi,
Does anyone know any problems with using a wireless usb mouse on a t60?
I have a new usb wireless mouse. It does not respond when plugged into any of my usb ports.
All the ports are working fine, and the t pad recognizes the mouse in windows xp. A driver gets installed, and the mouse appears in device manager.
But the pointer wont move. all the lights are on, but nobody is home.
Any ideas?
It doesn't seem to conflict with the trackpoint and i have disabled the touchpad anyway.
The I have also tried disableing the trackpoint but it makes no difference.
Thanks

Check in the BIOS for USB settings. Autoenable should let an external mouse take over when plugged in.

If there is a "Connect" button on the mouse and receiver, press both of them at the same time. Try to keep the receiver on the same side as you use your mouse.
You can certainly use TrackPoint, touch pad and the external mouse all at the same time. There is no need to disable it in the BIOS.

Hi,
OK I will try the buttons you mention. You may just be, right as here is what I have done so far.
Well I checked my bios to make sure that USB is enabled, and it is.
Still no response from the mouse.
Because the receiver seemed to be working, i.e it is acknowledged by XP when I plug it in, and the light comes on, I wondered if the mouse itself was the problem.
Although new, it is only a cheap unbranded freeby I got with a promotional offer. There is no leaflet or manual with it at all and no driver. I have no idea of the make, other than it is called "chic".
There is no switch to turn if off and on. When you put in the battery it is on.
So I took the battery out to turn it off.
Then I tried again. I put in the receiver, xp responds and says I have installed a mouse. Then I put the battery back in the mouse, and hey presto, it is now working.
Then I discovered if I dont touch the mouse for about 10 minutes, it automatically turns itself off.
Then I pressed one of the mouse buttons, and it turns itself on again, and the receiver and mouse connect and it starts working. So I guess the mouse needs to be initialized in some way.
There is one button on the end of the USB receiver device, and there are 2 buttons (apart from the regular operation buttons), on the wireless mouse.
On the mouse, one very small button is in a recess under the mouse. The other slightly larger button is just behind the wheel on the top surface of the mouse.
If I press the receiver button the light glows brightly for about 5 or so seconds, and if I press the small recessed button on the mouse, the red light under the mouse glows brightly for about 5 or so seconds.
But definitely, pressed individually, they have no effect, and the mouse wont work, unless I either, remove the battery, or leave the mouse untouched until it turns itself off, and then either re insert the battery, or depress one of the regular buttons. Then the light on the usb receiver device "flutters", and all is working.
So I guess my next step is to try the "connect" buttons together as you say. I'll do this next time I use the mouse a few hours from now.
Are ALL wireless mice like this, or is it just my cheap freeby? Maybe I should stick to wired mice?
Will let you know.
Thanks

I think it is just your freebie. I have Logitech wireless mice on both T60 and desktop, and have never seen one behave like yours.

The lone button on the receiver and the recessed button on the bottom of the mouse are the connect buttons. When both buttons are pressed simultaneously, the mouse and receiver seek out each other and negotiate a new scrambling code. Newer cordless mice and keyboards are better at maintaining connection. I have to reconnect older devices all the time.

Well that more or less fixed then. Yup if I press the receiver button, then the recessed mouse button, in that order, they connect everytime, and the mouse works okl.
Yup, it seems then that my cheap freeby, is as good as you get for nothing then. LOL.
Maybe I will buy a branded mouse soon.
But I guess as long as this one works, I'll keep it for now. Once working it seems to function like any wired mouse.
Thanks for the input all.
