Is the core duo in the T60 significantly faster than the P Centrino M in the T43?

Not significantly faster, but noticeably faster.
You can also buy a Core 2 Duo from ebay and pop it in the T60 and THEN the T60 will be significantly faster (if thats your goal).

To answer your question, it really depends on what you're doing. Most typical notebook usage llike office, media and internet is not particularly CPU intensive. For those things the better CPU will make little difference. Web pages won't open faster on a dual core CPU any faster than a single CPU. In these situations the hard drive more than the CPU is most likely the performance bottleneck, but anything where the application can take advantage of multiple cores, audio or video encoding would be an example of this, a dual core will offer a significant advantage. If you're debating between a T60 and a T43, I'd opt for the T60 unless there's a large price difference. The T60 is a better built more modern machine and gets you access to bigger faster SATA drives.
