BIOS Password locked out after disabling it?

Hi all,
I was about to run the recovery CDs on my personal T60p (2008-93G) ready to sell the machine as I have a W500 now. I had Power on and HDD password set so I went in to the BIOS to change it. I logged into the BIOS as usual with the password, disabled the power on password (PWD, enter, enter) saved settings (F10). Machine restarted and I still get the power on icon but now the password I previously used to login doesn't work
I now cannot get into the BIOS or boot this machine! I am an IBMer and our help desk said that it would need a motherboard replacement! Really?
How can it be that I managed to get to the BIOS with the password I always use, disable it and now cant get back in at all?
Any thoughts please?
Thanks
Ant
(P.S. I appreciate this is likely a sensitive subject, if anyone can help or advise I will happily provide you my IBM email via PM if that in any way helps validate this request)
