T60 system restore won't work

I tried searching before posting and didn't find much to help me, there was an old thread with a similar question but no replies to it, hopefully I'll have better luck...
I want to do a factory restore on my T60 which is running XP Pro, I have done it in the past but since then have a new harddrive. Even though I use AVG, Spybot S&D and Malwarebytes I am still getting some minor, but annoying problems- lots of notices about corrupt files (including one that just says "directory C:// is corrupt" or something like that) etc and the computer is running slower than it used to. System scans from all three of these programs come out clean.
I've backed up all the files I need to a harddrive and have tried every avenue to do a system restore and nothing works. Going through the control panel-> system restore, it lets me select a date to restore, then it restarts the computer but when it boots back up it tells me it can't restore and to pick a different date (and I try and it does the same thing). Hitting the thinkvantage button on startup and going through the rescue and recovery console, it will only let me choose a factory restore, which is fine, but it doesn't work- it tells me some file is missing or corrupted. If I try to do it after the computer is booted and then access the rescue and recovery console through windows, it will let me get as far as starting a factory restore and then it doesn't do anything. Eventually the computer restarts and everything is exactly the same as before.
This isn't a pressing issue, my computer still works (just has some annoying problems like the corrupt file notices) and if I need to I can get a new harddrive from my school, but if I could just get this thing to do a factory restore I would rather do that. Anyone have any advice for me? I do not have any kind of restore CD.
