Driver Sweeper Installation on T60P

I'm using Vista, and am unsure if I should install Driver Sweeper to the normal desktop, then uninstall the ATI driver and THEN go into safe mode to run driver sweeper?
If that is the correct procedure, do I reboot into safe mode again to install the Lenovo ATI Catalyst program. The reason I ask the latter question is because if I don't go into Safe Mode Vista reinstalls an older driver. But it seems I should reboot (into safe mode) to complete the work that driver sweeper has done before installing the ATI Catalyst package.
Thanks,
taichi

Well I've got a bit of trouble right at the start. I got an error message saying that some part of the Driver Sweeper wouldn't install properly because I needed elevation. If this means that I need to run as administrator, I am running as administrator since I've never established a non-administrator account.
Confused in LA.
thanks,

Here is the complete error message that I received after Driver Sweeper seemed to have finished installing:
Unable to execute file:
C:\Program Files\Phyxion.net\Driver Sweeper\Driver Sweeper.exe
CreateProcess failed; code 740.
The requested operation requires elevation.
Pretty confusing, given that I am running as administrator!
Thanks,

Did you right click on that .exe and select "run as admin"?

Interesting. I noticed a shortcut for DriverSweeper, right clicked on it, selected run as administartor and it appeared to open the program. This seems odd to me (my inexperience), as I assumed the program didn't install given the error message.
'
I downloaded through Firefox, and rightclicking on the download entry did nothing.
Would it be better to find the actual target exe and right click on that?
Thanks for the eye-opening info!

Yes, you would want to right click on the actual downloaded file on your machine, and run as admin.

Okay, I opened up the C Drive, found the Phyxion in program files, and see the executable there. Will I be able to navigate there in safe mode, and right-click to run as administrator?
My other question to you is that since I right-clicked on the shortcut for driver cleaner on my desktop, and selected run as administrator (which I did last night) if I simply double click on the shortcut now, it appears that it opens the main Driver Sweeper window, with its selectable row of empty "click" boxes representing each driver type. I haven't attempted to do anything more than open the program, which it appears to do now normally without ever having right clicked on the executable itself. Is it possible that right clicking on the shortcut, as I did last night, and selecting run as administrator essentially legitimized the program?
Thanks for your help,
taichi

Since I have no experience with this program I cannot tell you exactly what to expect. The best way to find out is to right click on the .exe and run as admin. It is not necessary to do that out of safe mode. If you are the admin user, then it will execute and do whatever the program is designed to do while you are in Windows.

Okay, I knew this driver update wouldn't be easy, even with my taking the conservative route of installing the last official Lenovo Catalyst package rather than a more recent ATI package.
I uninstalled the ATI driver, went into safe mode, cleaned everything with driver sweeper, rebooted again into safe mode and double clicked on the download of the Lenovo package, and seemingly ran the installer. When I got to the end of the processs the window said that files had been extracted (to where), but that clicking finish does not mean that the program is installed! Then it directed me to read the read me on installation. Where in blazes is that?
So I'm still in safe mode and confused. Usually when you install something it installs!

More confusion!
I went into the C drive, found the Drivers folder, double clicked on ATI Catalyst setup, and things seemed to go in the right direction. I chose express install, and as it was running it came up with a window saying either device (or driver) not detected!
Then I tried again, right clicked on the setup and chose run as administrator, and I got the same error message! Now I can either watch the installer program just sit there or hit cancel!
I'm beginning to think that I just should have let the Catalyst Package run on the normal desktop, and simply overwrite the existing driver. Could it not be that the program is looking for the old driver, and that uninstalling the old driver was not just unnecessary, but even counterproductive?
Help!

Obviously, the ATI application is looking for a driver that does not exist on your machine. Have you tried running Windows Update (yes, the Microsoft one) and see if it offers a video driver? If so, it might be the one you want. Windows Upate has gotten pretty competent with such things, as it will poll your hardware, and offer updated items.
If you are running Windows 7 your video is likely already optimized, without the need for Catalyst.
In Vista, Microsoft may still suggest an appropriate driver.
If System Recovery is enabled on your machine, you may be able to backtrack to the restore point ahead of all your updates and revert to the proper operating state.

Dear mgo:
Thanks for your reply.
I was able to shut down using task manager, and Vista reinstalled the earlier version of the ATI 5200 driver that was on there before, so I'm back to you UXGA.
It seems to me that the Lenovo ATI package needs to be installed over the older driver, as it seemed that the installer's failure to find a device or device driver was due to the previous uninstall of the ATI driver.
This is why I asked earlier in this or another thread about whether it was necessary to uninstall the old driver.
What do you think?
I posted on the other thread that I had started earlier on the ATI driver installation about my experiences, and one fellow who answered suggested that the Lenovo ATI package needed to be modded.
Once again, what do you think?
I appreciate your help.
