ATI Catalyst Package impossible to download

I'm running Vista 32 Ultimate, and Norton Internet Security 2010. At the recommendation of another poster I downloaded, or attempted to download, ATI Catalyst 10.2 from the following official website:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/w ... ng=English

It seems to download all 95 MB or so, and then Norton scans it for viruses. Inevitably Norton's scanning bar on the Mozilla Firefox download window gets stuck at some point. I give it a good amount of time, and then ultimately get a message "program not responding." Using Task Manager, I back out of all that, and am left with what appears to be a complete 95 MB downbload that will not open when I double-click on it.

Does anyone have any idea about what's wrong here?

Thanks,

Taichi

I just downloaded the 10-2_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc.exe file and generated an MD5 checksum:

MD5: 009c0c9a7e1c49ca1bfa0692d6108eab

Install one of these free programs and then use it to calculate the MD5 checksum of the file you downloaded and see if they match:

http://www.exactfile.com/downloads/
http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/md5sums/

If the MD5 checksums are not the same, then there was some corruption during your download. I used Firefox and have AVG 9 installed; no errors appeared on the scan and it ran/finished normally without detecting any problems. I then executed the .exe program and it started up but I canceled the install since I don't want any of these files on my system.

Thanks for your response. Some of what you said is a bit beyond my ken, but it seems that you mentioned two different tools which can certify the authenticity of the download based on a signature of some sort... checksum.

The thing is, this is the third time it's happened to me downloading from the official site through Firefox. It seems strange that I would get corrupted files each time. I'm wondering if it's something to do with an interaction with Norton. I can try downloading it through Internet Explorer, though I tend not to use that because I feel it's less secure. Maybe the downloader in Internet Explorer will work more smoothly with Norton.

It seems your a combination, with AVG 9, gives you good downloads.

About to try it through Internet Explorer...

Yes, sorry if I made your brain explode with information :) . MD5 checksum, along with CRC32, is a common way of determining if a copy of a file is unchanged from the "original". Some sites will publish a checksum for large files so that users (downloaders) can quickly figure out if the transfer was error-free. Since AMD did not do this for their 95MB install package, I thought the next best thing would be to download it myself and give you the MD5 checksum that I got. This will at least tell you within a 99.99% degree of certainty that the files are the same.

I hope that Norton wouldn't be doing anything to screw up the file. The same holds true for Firefox or IE. I've never know a browser to corrupt a download. What might be occurring is that the file is being stored in damaged blocks on your disk drive or you have a memory problem. If you had deleted the .exe file from the first two download attempts, Windows may have kept using the same disk blocks. For your next attempt, I would leave the existing .exe file on your system, but rename it to something like "delete_me". Then download the file, get an MD5 checksum and see if it's the same as the one I obtained.

Well I managed to download the ATI Package using Internet Explorer, extracted the files, and used mobility modder, as I was advised to do by another poster, which is supposed to allow the ATI package to be installed onto the ThinkPad, therefore bypassing Lenovo's own Catalyst Package which has the older graphics card driver.

The whole point of the upgrade was not only to get the Catalyst Control Panel but also to upgrade to the newest driver 8.591 from the default 8.362.0.0. So I ran the installer, and after rebooting I went to check device manager and found out that the ATI 5200 driver installed is still 8.36 2.0.0.
