Fan replacement + use of locked HDD from another system

I have a T61p type 6459-CTO s/n L3-D6017 with "Fan Error" on startup. I cannot get into BIOS, the error happens before that and shuts it down again. Fan label displays FRU codes 42X4685 and 42W2028.

HDD had a password, I remember it very well, but I'm not sure what kind of encryption it uses (if there are many flavours).

a) e-Bay mostly has 42X4685 and 42W2028 as used. How do I find out if there are newer FRU that are compatible with the 42X4685 / 42W2028 and can replace them, that I could find on e-bay new and put in place?

The following link only lists 42X4685 as valid for type 6459, does that mean there just aren't any?

Edit - actually found it on IBM Lenovo UK site; will try to order.

Ordered from IBM Lenovo UK so removing this question.

b) I need to access some data on that HDD urgently but have no access to another Thinkpad system. I tried connecting it to my desktop system but it wouldn't even boot with it connected due to the password (it is Asus P6T based). Any advice?

Thanks for your help.

Yeah, don't use white text...

Try blowing into the fan when you start up, it may just get you past the boot error.
Otherwise you need to wait for another Thinkpad, or a more compatible PC.
My PC has an Abit Av8-3rdEye mobo with AMD 3200 CPU, and I can unlock a TP HD with known password without any problems on it (HD in a USB enclosure).

Yeah, I tried blowing but I guess I need a compressed air blower or something; regular blowing didn't work.

And good advice about trying in a different PC.

With compressed air you'd ruin the fan.
Try a hairdryer (on low speed) instead.

I used a screwdriver to guide the fan along and it works again (not for long I suspect).

Does anyone know where to find the service manual for T61p with instructions on how to replace the fan?
