T61 - Noisy fan
T61 - Noisy fan
Hi all,
I have a T61 (7659-CTO) for my work laptop that's suddenly developed a noisy (grinding) fan. It also has a habit of putting itself into standby mode towards the end of the day which I assume is down to overheating.
Fan needs swapping out right? I've been on the Lenovo spares site and have identified the part number as 42W2460 (Toshiba model - other one is out of stock).
This is as simple as swapping it out right? I've had a poke about and nothing seems to be wrong with the existing fan assembly that could be fixed with a clean, pretty dust free in there really.
Cheers!

Re: T61 - Noisy fan
If its making noises probably the bearings have worn out. Check the manual on how to replace.

Thanks .. researching it now.GrandMasterKhan wrote:If its making noises probably the bearings have worn out. Check the manual on how to replace.
I've seen that a few people sort this by oiling the bearings, worth a shot?
IBM UK want £15 to ship a fan to me which stinks so would be great if I could repair myself!

I had a similar problem on my 14" T61, the fan became very noisy even at low speeds.
Took it out of the heatsink (takes some care to do it cleanly), separated the blades from the motor/bearing, cleaned both and applied a few drops of oil.
This was a few months ago and so far the fan is as good as new.

Re: T61 - Noisy fan
I've just done this ... MUCH better, and the amount of dust within the fan enclosure (not accessible from outside the laptop) was incredible, naughty IBM for making it so hard to clean!Definitely.
