My T60 is running XP Pro, SP3, fully patched. Removed all Semantec software and using NOD32, ZAP Pro & CounterSpy.
Disabled fingerprint reader & software, TVT Scheduler, Rescue & Recovery (Use local network storage for complete system backups. Need the extra drive space.)
This concerns two problems: 1.) a recoccuring problem, where installed Microsoft security updates repeatedly prompt for reinstall. 2.) Quicken 2010- See below.
Problem 1
Microsoft Customer Service has provided several procedures for eliminating the repeated reinstall prompts. Unfortunately we have not located or corrected the underlying problem. I'm hoping someone reading this has faced and fixed a similar situation.
First attempted fix:
1.) Manually uninstalled the problem Security Update using Control Panel => Add/Remove Programs.
2.) Delete the Software Distribution folder and reinstall the problem update.
A. Click "Start", "Run", type: "cmd" (without quotations) and press "Enter". In the command window, type "net stop WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press "Enter".
B. Click "Start", "Run", type: "%windir%" (without quotations) and press "Enter".
C. Double-click the SoftwareDistribution folder.
D. In the opened folder, rename the folder Download to Download.old.
E. Click "Start", "Run", type: "cmd" (without quotations) and press "Enter". In the command window, type "net start WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press "Enter".
3.) Allow the problem update(s) to automatically download and install using the automated process.
After XP Pro reboots, the desktop Window's Update icon appears and continues to prompt for the same update.
Second attempted fix:
1.) Repeated steps 1 and 2 above.
2.) Microsoft Customer Support sent me a installer file for the problem Security Update.
3.) I manually install the problem Security update. No error messages & Control Panel shows the update installed and verified it was installed the current date. I reboot the machine into regular mode.
The desktop Window's Update icon appears and still prompts for installation of the problem Update.
Booting into Safe Mode has no effect.
Next collected System Information and WindowsUpdate.log, and forwarded to the Microsoft technician working on the case. They reported nothing wrong with XP Pro.
Ran Microsoft Collection Tool and TDDS Rootkit Removing Tool and forwarded the results to the Microsoft technician. Nothing abnormal found.
Third attempted fix:
1.) Step 1 - Manually uninstalled the problem Security Update using Control Panel => Add/Remove Programs.
2.) Step 2 - Manually reloaded the update temporary folders using the procedure outlined in the First Set of Instructions.
3.) Step 3 - Manually downloaded and installed the problem Update with one new parameter added to the command line:
C:\WindowsXP-KB "Problem update File" -x86-ENU.exe /overwriteoem
The /overwriteoem parameter appears to workaround the underlying problem.
I use the T60 during business trips around the world. While at home, I can manually locate and install each problem update with the /overwriteoem parameter, this process is difficult or impossible while traveling at sea, or other locations with intermittent internet access, sometimes at dial-up speeds.
Now MS Customer Service is suggesting:
1. Manually rename the ntkrnlpa.exe and ntoskrnl.exe files
2. Restore the system back to a state before this issue first occurred.
The problem with this suggestion is the system would need to be restored approximately 18 months ago. Restore points that long ago no longer exist.
Problem 2
After installing Quicken Premier 2010, R 8, the Security Drop Down list does not on the Security Detail View window. Clicking on the down arrow does nothing. I can use the keyboard's down or up arrows and manually scroll through the security list.
I've validated and super validated the data set, no problem found. Booting into Safe Mode, this problem disappears. Something in the Lenovo's regular mode is causing this problem. Same version of Quicken and Quicken data set on a retail XP desktop works without problem. Quicken Tech Support is stumped.
Previous install of Quicken 2007 worked without problem.
I'd appreciate any constructive advice on this situation and/or installing a retail copy of XP Pro.

When you uninstalled the Symantec software, did you use the Norton Removal Tool?
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/ts ... 3108162039
Look in Event Viewer for clues (Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer). Use Google to search for solutions to any event errors you are getting when you try installing the critical update. Use Google to search for others that are having the same problem as you with the same critical update (search by update ID, i.e. KB989474).
