T60p 2007, what is the HDD's interface?

#1 Post by JSabou1 » Mon May 03, 2010 12:48 pm

List of WD Scorpio Blue's on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... &x=21&y=34

I bought a 500 GB WD Scorpio Blue off ebay "new" but i got ripped off and too late to complain...

I'm deciding if i should get another HD but this time get it from newegg or an actual store.... or just get a new laptop.

I see SATA and ATA-6 hard drives. I don't know what ATA-6 looks like but I'm 95% sure that the hdd i put in wasn't SATA.

SO is it ATA-6?

These seems to be at a very reasonable price:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834146613

The only big things I'm concerned about is the HDD would be 500+ Gigs and a fast hdd transfer rate AND how strongly it is built. I want this to last 5+ years. But a fast processor and video card never hurts :P

Thanks for the help, any laptop suggestions would be appreciated.

What's up with the WD, perhaps it's still under warranty? PATA has a bunch of pins on it. It looks quite different from SATA. The T60 uses a SATA hard drive. Any SATA drive should work. I believe the 320GB 7200RPM WD is the fastest hard drive out there, though the Hitachi 7k500 is a good choice if you need more space. The Hitachi 5k500 is very low power and quiet if that's your goal.

No, i didn't get any warranty information, and i got it from ebay around 4 months ago, but they only keep records for 2 months.

The problem is that sectors are going bad and i'm getting alot of cycle redundancy checks, even after I ran chkdsk. I'm afraid it will die soon. Hmmm, I'm pretty sure it wasnt SATA though because it didnt have the characteristic L's. It as more of a single line with grooves in it.

Fry's has the 500GB, 7200rpm Hitachi on sale this week. T6x series only use SATA as far as I know.

hmmm that's unusual... i get 6 MB/sec download max on it, is that about right for a 7200 rpm 8 MB cache sata hdd? Seems too low.

Yes, it ought to be about ten times that for sequential read/write.

For reliability and low heat, I think you ought to stick with Hitachi as they also come standard with Thinkpads unless there has been some cost down effort and they are using other manufactuers now. Seagate I would not recommend. Sure to let you down based on anecdotal stories. WDC is supposed to be very good so surprised it let you down.

BTW I wouldnt take the eBay sellers answer as acceptable. You have a serial number for the drive along with an invoice. What is it with them that is preventing warranty service? Cant you go to WDC for warranty claims? Or were you asking for an exchange or is it OEM and you have to deal with the seller? Show them the receipt THEY gave you. Its inexcuseable. Call them back. Dont negotiate, be diplomatic but very firm that you want a refund or an exchange. Dont be afraid to "out them" on the Internet either. They shafted you and should be punished by losing future business.

Usually the warranty is tied to the drive via the serial number. You can look it up on WD's website here. Typically hard drives have three year warranties, some have five. If it's fairly new, it still should be under warranty.

I think the exception is if he was sold a bare HDD or basically an OEM HDD in which case he would have to revert to the seller? BTW its rare for any retail business not to keep sales records. Don't buy the BS about 2 months.

Perhaps, but usually even bare drives have a one year warranty. If it's a 500GB drive, I'd say the chances are that it's under warranty are pretty good. See if it's under warranty. I don't cost anything.
