Error: This USB Device Can Perform Faster if Connected to...

“This USB Device can Perform Faster if Connected to Hi Speed USB 2.0 Port?”

This is a common error message when some ThinkPad users connect a USB device to their T6x, T4x laptops etc. Someone said it's a hardware problem, hence you need to replace the motherboard to fix it; others said it is due to softwares behaved badly. Discussions about this and similar USB issues are found here and other forums, e.g.

In fact, this is just a USB driver issue, and it can be fixed by just a few clicks. Here I provide two links (similar solution) for those who are suffering from this USB problem.

While this holds true for T6x and newer machines, 99% of the time it is the failing Southbridge chip on T4x/R5x machines that causes malfunction of the USB ports in which case there is no software solution for the issue at hand.
