I'm running a dual-boot Linux/WinXP machine. The other day I working I'm MS Word in XP, and the screen/mouse/keyboard freeze up. I power down, and when the screen comes back up it's blank (after the Thinkpad screen) as such:

I dock the PC and Ctrl+F7 to bring up another monitor, and I get the crazy characters in the screenshots below, and the then the screen dies. I found a work-around: my GRUB version has a "memtest" option (the blue picture below), when I run that (I guess, I can't tell what the screen says), the display works when I next power cycle.

Second time this has happened, I'm not sure what triggers it either, as it's happened using both Windows & Linux. Any body seen anything like this? Any ideas out there on what to trouble-shoot or fix this? I'm not even sure how to google this.

Here's grub:

Ubuntu starts to boot:

As far as I get w/ XP:

The "memtest":

Another memtest:

What the heck is going on here?

I am guessing that you have an nVidia Quadro NVS 140M or Quadro FX 570M GPU and it is defective. What is the machine type/model from the sticker on the bottom of the machine?. It will be a (7) digit alphanumeric like 2007-3CU

Yeah, you need to replace the systemboard. Lenovo is replacing these boards behind the scenes. Read through the linked thread, open a repair incident with IBM, and if they won't acknowledge it or fix it, contact Mark at that forum. Good luck.

Is this an IDENTIFIED issue that they are not publicly recognizing?
Are they doing this for people with extended warranties or everyone?

Yes and no. You have to read the threads over at Lenovo forums to get the scoop. Yes it is offered to anyone with or without a warranty.
