Unexplained rise in CPU temperatures on T60p

On my T60p, with a Core Duo T2500, the CPU temperatures have gone up by approximately 9 C, from about 68 C, to 77 C, at low load, when plugged in (CPU running at maximum speed.) CPU temperatures would normally stay below 80 C at all times, they now go over 80 when the system is subjected to any sort of load.

GPU temperatures are unaffected.

The heatsink is not clogged.

I've attempted reseating the heatsink (loosening and retightening the screws, including the ones on the northbridge/GPU retaining plate,) to no effect.

Possible explanations?

BTW, the thermal grease is Arctic Silver 5.

Just saw 89 C with the bottom of the machine just warm.

And I've felt this machine with an uncooled chip putting out those temperatures, it's a hell of a lot hotter than that. (And, besides, the area where the GPU is is hotter.)

Rotating the machine such that the battery is facing the ground causes a massive increase in reported temperature, with no increase in actual temperature.

So, I believe that's pointing towards the CPU thermal sensor. Next question: How to fix? Hopefully not a motherboard replacement... I've done one too many of those on this chassis already. CPU, that'll be an excuse to go to a Core 2 Duo, at least.

I'd be interested in seeing your fan rotational speed. Can you load and run tpfancontrol and post the output for all temps and the fan speed here? Run the program in BIOS mode.

Fan will go up to 4565 RPM, BTW. Just switched to BIOS mode, settled for 5 minutes...

1 cpu 76°C
2 aps 44°C
3 crd 40°C
4 gpu 74°C
5 no5 39°C
7 bat 36°C
9 bus 48°C
10 pci 56°C
11 pwr 54°C

State: Fan 128
Switch: 76°C
Speed: 3489 RPM

I'm kind of bushed tonight, but I will fire up my T60P with a T2600 in it tomorrow, run it at full speed and report TPfancontrol temps so you can have a comparison. My gut feel is that 76*C is high for no CPU activity other than running at full speed. Your fan speed looks normal to me.

It got down to 69 C running the fan at full speed manually, but like I said, it doesn't actually seem like the CPU is running that hot.

It seems like the sensor is misreporting the temperature. And, it looks like the sensor is on the motherboard? **expletives left out so you don't have to delete them**

And... Flash might actually be the culprit.

Close a Flash app, and after a few minutes of settling, CPU temps are 54 C, fan at 3425 RPM, GPU at 65 C.

CPU load isn't noticeably lower, though.

And, more importantly, this is one that I've regularly run for a while now, and while it stresses the GPU (when using it in IE,) it's normally light on the CPU.

http://bhtooefr.ath.cx/singlestalkhq.htm is the page. It's an embedded UStream applet of a friend's video stream.

Hmmm, I know these Core Duo's have temp diodes built in, but I don't know for sure where the T60P temperature sensors are. You can contact troubadix via PM on this forum. He wrote and maintains tpfancontrol.

Edit" 54*C sounds more like normal.

Decided to check things out, and pulled the heatsink, because the air did feel a bit hot.

Noticed that apparently I hadn't gotten the CPU quite covered with thermal compound well enough, and the GPU had a little bit uncovered, too. (What's odd is that it had run for months like this. All I can figure is that the compound was flowing between the heatsink and the CPU, and left an area uncovered.)

Added more to both.

Temps now?

1 cpu 66°C
2 aps 39°C
3 crd 37°C
4 gpu 71°C
5 no5 34°C
7 bat 31°C
9 bus 40°C
10 pci 48°C
11 pwr 49°C

I'll take that.

I've experienced Flash running up the temps on my T60p (with an upgraded Merom Core 2 Duo T7600) recently as well. I just added some Arctic Silver 5 paste yesterday, and all was well after I turned it back on. Can I ask how long ago your previous application of new coating of thermal paste had been? Also, which version of TPFanControl do you use for the T60p?

Thanks...

Well, whenever I replaced the motherboard, which would've been around October or so, would've been when I applied the AS5.

I was running TPFanControl v0.61 before this happened, upgraded to 0.62 during troubleshooting.
