T60 battery problems

#1 Post by JGA » Sat May 29, 2010 4:11 pm

I've had my T60 for three years, but rarely use the original 6-cell battery (it reports only 25 cycles). About a month ago, the battery started to become flakey and now appears to be completely dead. Before it went dead, I ran the battery reset utility a few times. Each time that I ran it, the battery's reported capacity dropped lower and lower.

This week, I purchased a used battery for it. However, this battery is also three years old and has 200+ cycles on it. When I installed it today, it initially showed 100% charge, but in less than 15 minutes, the gauge dropped to 2% and the laptop shut down. I usually buy batteries from Lenovo's Outlet store for $35-$40, but they haven't had any T60 batteries for a while.

The most likely problem is that both batteries are simply old and weak. I just want to make sure that I don't have a problem with my T60's charging system or that it's having a problem sensing the condition of the batteries. Has anybody seen a problem like this before (good battery, but T60 thinks that it's not good)?

I guess I'll have to spend the $$$ for a new battery.

When a battery is three years old, it can go at any time. If you're still stateside, you can hit the outlet for a new battery. Right now the 6 cell is $38.50 and the 9 cell is $43.50. That's better than eBay prices and they're genuine batteries. I bought one for my R60 last year. It looked and worked like new to me. The downside is there's only 90 day warranty, but at that price, it's worth the risk in my opinion.
