T60 empty optical drive slot - can it be converted?

I have been offered a T60 1.83mhz 4gb which has had the optical drivde removed. I have a couple of external ones anyway and I don't need CD or DVD R/W internal drive. I believe Blu-Ray is out of the question. But can I adapt the slot for any other useful functions? Obviously I'd have to do some internal re-connecting but is this thing a runner?

Thx.

No need to convert it. For more storage just get a 2nd hard drive adapter and install a spare SATA drive. Slide it in and Bob's your uncle.

Thanks for this. It is the way I am going to go - ordered one from Hong Kong. However, I have posted a request for info on the most cost-effective 32gb SSD that I can use iwth it. I'd like 64gb but the budget is not there.

Cheers, Jay

OT but "Bob's your uncle"? Is this from the Ozzie and Harriet and Leave it to Beaver era?
