Vodafone wireless dongle FAILED to connect to the Internet

I just returned from holidays in Egypt (Sharm al Shaik).
For businessreasons I needed an internet connection. The management of the resort provided me, as a service, a Vodafone USB wireless 3G dongle.
I was told: just put the dongle in one of the USB ports, and all required software will be installed. Enter "install" and press "OK" (or equivalents) during the installation procedure, and you're connected to the Internet (via Vodafone Egypte).
After a while it was reported that the network was found, I pressed okay "to connect" and then it reports an error alike "Wlan profile ........".
Unfortunetely I can't recall the exact error message.
Several times I removed the software, started the install procedure over and over again, to no avail.
Obviously, I was frustrated and businesswise handicapped. Whom of the forum members could tell me what could have created this problem? And how it possibly could have been solved?
FYI:
My T60 is running XP (fully updated)and in the bios I switched off the Internal wireless Intel card.
Is there someone who has experienced similar problems and resolved the problem?
