Need a new fan

#1 Post by roumancesoireee » Wed Jul 14, 2010 3:39 pm

My T61's fan stopped working ... not sure how to replace the [censored] thing but been doing some reading on it. I was just wondering if there are any places I can buy the replacement parts retail? My laptop is super hot so I want the replacement asap.

Thanks

You can buy them retail from Lenovo. What is the machine type/model from the sticker on the bottom of the machine? .e.g. 7647-3CU

its a 7662-CTO. I tried several stores including Best Buy and they all said they don't carry laptop fans. I guess I gotta buy it online.

The FRU # for your machine is 42W2462. It costs $48.76 from Lenovo US. Add tax and shipping to that. You may want to try EBay.

Thanks Harry!

Is it pretty easy to install the fan? Also do you think I should take my machine apart first to see if its really the fan? When I put my hand by the fan, on the left side, I feel no breeze ... therefore I conclude it should be the fan.

Run tpfancontrol in BIOS mode and see what the fan speed is after the machine heats up a bit. I've never seen a discrete GPU T61 with zero rpm fan speed after it's been on awhile. I'd guess that if it were not spinning at all you'd get a fan error. Maybe you have a quiet fan.

Ok I'll do that. I just find it strange that I feel no breeze at all by my fan.

Harry,

I ran the program in BIOS mode and I have

state: Fan 128

Switch: 54C

Speed 3000+RPM

So my fan isn't broken?

Thanks

If you don't feel a breeze maybe its clogged. May need to blow it out with compressed air. Be gentle with it though. I also have a 7662 and recently replaced my fan. Be careful not to pinch the power cables near the back of the laptop. I did and eventually ended up shorting my system. Thankfully the laptop recovered when fixed the problem and taped the one open cable.
