I am buying second hand IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T60

#1 Post by titanium » Mon Jul 26, 2010 1:48 am

I am buying the secon hand laptop IBM T60, Core Duo 1.83GHz T2400, 14".

Are there any problems with this series of laptops? Are they overheating or anything I should be worried about? I heard that they are running very hot. Hotter than the older T4x series?

They aren't overheating. The models with FireGL GPUs (T60p) do tend to run hot. The models with the ATI X1300/X1400 less hot, and those with Intel graphics are quite cool.

I just did exactly that, retiring my T40/41 for a second hand T60, so far it has been a pleasant experience, fast and stable. According to the forums, the T60 should not have the faults of the T4x with failing GPU and USB degrading. Mine is running Win7 Ultimate, no missing functions etc., although I have not put the fingerprint-reader in operation - I don't even use a password (this is Denmark... :D ).
Only consideration is battery-time. My 7800mAh battery is only just over 50% performance (from 2007) and will give me 2 hours maximum. When that is depleated further, I will get a replacement so I can get over 3 hours runtime.

I did the same thing. T60, 15" IPS, ATI X1400, to replace my T43 15" IPS.

So far I am very happy with this swap. For a while I have been using them side by side, and in my eyes the T60 carries on all the features that I like about the T43, only in an improved way. Faster in most ways, but not as much as I imagined. I am not sure what that proves - if the T43 actually keeps up better than I thought, or if the difference simply isn't that big until I push things a little bit more than I have done.

The most distinctive difference, however, is that the fan in the T60 rarely comes on. I am typing this on the T43, and the fan is now running full blast. (The fan is new and thermal paste is reapplied, so nothing wrong) The T43 is the hottest T4x, my T42 is more on par with the T60 when it comes to fan noise. Finally I got the 3rd USB port, that I always lacked when using my T4Xs, and I never have to worry about loose GPUs and Southbridges anymore.

I am jealous. The fan in my T60p runs from the time it boots until I shut it down.

Tnx for the replies guys. I read the replies and bought it. I must say that the keyboard is better than on the old T40. I like the design and it runs a lot more quiet.
There is only 1 problem the LCD display moves for like 0.4 cm. When i open the screen i can move it a bit. Guess that is the charm of buying the second hand stuffs :D.

Here is the picture of the screen:

Is there any way that i use a screwdriver and fix those?

I found a video on youtube showing loose screen:

First off all, sorry for hijack your thread titanium, and for digging this up, but I've been offered a T60, 14,1, with the X1400 GPU [€250 +/- $346.42 (is it a good price?)] and I was wondering if there are any issues like in the T4# series, specially with the ATI GPU. Are T60's OK on this matter?. Some other experiences are welcome. Thank you.

No problems with any of the T60, apart from T60p which run hotter than the rest (but still have no problems).
It has all been said above already!
That price is a bit high compared to US prices, but for Europe I guess it's OK.

As per RBS - For Europe, this price is OK for a decent X1400 GPU spec'd T60 with general cosmetic wear & tear. There are a few UK IT disposal resellers on eBay who are/have been selling T60's for between £200 to £250+ depending on their spec's & cosmetic condition - It would seem that the EU market for used T60's are stable, with price's in Germany being a little more higher than in the UK.

After owning a T60 (x1400 GPU) for 3 years, here are my impressions of the machine and the flaws I have found:

pro:

very reliable, it never fails to crank up and get me online and go fast
fairly high build quality in most areas
easily upgradable to Core 2 Duo CPU
screen upgradable to Boe-Hydis UXGA IPS (1600x1200)
high quality keyboard
have rarely ever heard the fan
runs Windows 7 very fast with Core 2 Duo and RAM upgrade

con:

1400x1050 SXGA+ IPS screens by LG Philips turn yellow and dim after a year or two
magnesium frame cracks near CapsLk key on many of these machines, but can be superglued
system will run too hot if not periodically opened up and heatsinks/fan cleaned of dust, pet hair, etc. (if you don't think your T60 runs hot, try playing chess on it! - lol)
poor stock thermal compound contributes to overheating, replace with Arctic Silver 5 on CPU & GPU to fix
left edge of top plastic cover can get loose over time and not snap shut
the USB port near the PCMCIA slot can get blocked from use by cables (i.e. Echo Indigo sound card)
Lenovo locks BIOS from using 3rd party cards such as mobile broadband, you have to get Zender's fixed BIOS and install

overall, I am very pleased with this purchase, and my friends envy my 4 year old machine!

You could try posting a WTB (want to buy) ad in out Market forum, with as many details as you can.
There are quite a few sellers here, who will ship to Europe (ca. $50.-).
If you don't want that, I think your best bet is eBay Germany.

I've seen also good offers in Ebay UK, albeit most of them with XGA resolutions :?

Thank you for the answers.
I would prefer in EU because of adicional taxes (23%VAT and some more for customs).

I've been tracking some units in ebay.uk but the problem is the high postage costs. I will keep serching.

The T60 is not that heat like you think , with T2400/X1400 the usual heat is about 50 'C when you are watching a movie . the heat is 20 higher with NFS 9.
but it is very steady and durable .

The only downside to the T6x series over the T4x series that I could see (feel?) is that they are substantially heavier. I don't know what the relative weight spec is for similarly equipped models but the T6x is noticeably heavier when you first pick it up. Maybe this was a response to the "flexible" T4x issues!

Well, I don't know why it feels like this, but when comparing similar-sized machines (i.e. 14" to 14", 15" to 15"), the T60 is not an ounce heavier than a T4x.

T61 is somewhat heavier, though. Although I was comparing 14" standard to 14" wide.

I don't feel any big differences in weight between my T43p, my T60 and my T61 wide (all comparisons w/o batteries). I'm sure there are a couple of gramms differences here & there. But nothing terrible different :??:

I've had T41p, T43, T60 and T61. I agree that T4x feels lighter. And T61 feels heavier than T60.

T60 was a very reliable machine. I purchased it used about 3 years ago and it was still working fine when I decided to part it out (because selling price is so ridiculously low). My current T61 is way faster when it comes to CPU (T2500 vs T8300) but graphics chip on T60 (X1400) is way superior to intel's X3100, in terms of performance I mean. Drivers from ATI are probably more unstable than intel's, though.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you the T60, it's a great machine. You can do pretty much everything on it, even playing games. if you're not too demanding.
