Intermittent Standby Problem - T61

I've been reading extensively here about hibernation/standby problems but none of what i can find seem to be what i'm experiencing. Also most have to do with the Nvidia hardware.

I have the integrated Intel w/XGA - XP SP2 using Power Mgt.

Problem is approx. 8-9 out of 10 times the system will come out of Standby perfectly.

But those 1-2 times out of 10 it seems to come out of Standby yet it really doesn't. I can hear the hdd spinning but only get a blank (black) screen. Also the symbol for standby is still lit. Nothing fixes this from the keyboard or mouse. Hitting the power button immediately powers it down and then i can start it up with no problems. And then it will again go in and out of Standby with no problems. It will do this no matter what method i use to get it out of Standby (both from hitting FN key and power button.)

I have not tried just shutting the lid and opening it. I see where that has worked for some.

Again, it only happens rarely. Perhaps i should be counting to see if it happens on a certain amount of times entering Standby? In every other way the system is solid as a brick. This is the only weirdness i experience with it.

I don't always leave it on Standby. Every now and then i'll reboot just to clear out Windoze junk/cache etc... But there are many times when i'm in a hurry where i find that FN-F4 is my best friend on this laptop as it instantly enters Standby.

Anyone have any clues?

Thanking everyone in advance for any help with this.

Look in the event log and see if there are any messages at the time of standby or resume

Thanks richk! Also i should have been checking exactly which programs i had running when i placed it into Standby. Although that doesn't seem to be an issue with this. But who knows, perhaps there is that one app i'm overlooking.

I'll check events and keep a log. It just worked flawlessly this time after sitting in Standby overnight.
