Your suggestion needed! T60 repair project

#1 Post by nycmaster » Thu Jul 29, 2010 6:42 pm

Hello all
I wanted to ask you all for your opinion/suggestion for what I'm about to do.

I'm a long time Thinkpad lover and finally decided to do a weekend(?) project to resurrect my dead Thinkpad.
I have a T60 (2008-4AU) that's been sitting around for a while because it would not power up. I tried with different AC adapter and battery and no luck! My gut feeling is that the motherboard is dead.

Q1
Is there anything else I need to check for troubleshooting? Can there be anything else wrong with my T60 other than motherboard?

Q2
I guess I can buy a used motherboard from ebay and replace it. How hard will this be? I am kinda familiar with T60 and I did remove the palm rest and keyboard few times before to troubleshoot but not the entire motherboard. How easy/hard to replace the motherboard?

Any opinion or suggestion would be appreciated!.
If you feel that you must stop me from days of agony  (because it is not a simple procedure), please do so now!

Personally, I think the LCD is much more annoying to take apart than the motherboard. Hit the support and training site. It shows how to do each step of the disassembly process. That's if you get stuck somewhere along the line.

Main Question is, are you certain is the Motherboard ?, have you checked on the DC Power jack ? A new power jack costs $6 (inclusive of shipping), a Motherboard is significantly more expensive.

I replaced all parts possible on my T60p, here's just one component.

Doesn't sound like the DC jack is bad. OP tested with batteries (I assume charged) and it still didn't power on.

Well... since you want a weekend project, tear into the T60 and remove the motherboard to see if there are any traces of liquid damage or burnt electronics. If so, there is a slim chance of being able to fix it, as I suspect your motherboard is bad. You can also check the fuses.

If a replacement board is what you need, I have one that is an exact fit and type for your T60. PM me if interested.
