T60 2007 bootup with blank screen
T60 2007 bootup with blank screen
Hi people,
So my fan died just after my warranty ran out. I bought and replaced said fan. Now when I boot I get no beep code, the backlight is there but my screen is blank, keyboard cap lock, num lock, fn+F7 works etc.
When I remove RAM, I get the normal three quick beep code upon booting.
Any recommendation on what I can try to savage my lappy is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Khoan.

If you like to savage your laptop, borrow a sledge hammer from your neighbor.
If you like to salvage your laptop, we need some more info, such as full 7-character type (e.g. 2007-24U).
If you remove the RAM, you should have 1-3-3-1 beeps.
Before you put in the new fan, did you clean up and put in fresh thermal paste between CPU and cooler?

When you changed the fan, did you unplug it and remove the main battery? (It is possible something gt shorted.) Did you remove anything else? (CPU, LCD, etc.)
Re: T60 2007 bootup with blank screen
RealBlackStuff, yes it's a 2007-24U I believe. I got it off Bill Morrow.
richk, I don't think I have removed anything other than heatsink unit. Could I have stuffed up the connector to the screen, when remove those screws clamping down the ribbon to the screen?
I am able to get display on an external monitor using fn+f7 [windows 7 is trying to repair]. The display is grainy and not sharp. Perhaps a photo would be appropriate here [coming soon]. It looks like the view is just shifted to the bottom right corner, so I get a blank screen.
Is there some thing I can do to correct the connector to the screen? eg wiggle connector and pray, take screen out and fit it back which hopefully will uncover some faulty connection.
Thanks,
Khoan.

Are you getting a blank screen being lit at the bottom with the backlight?
If so try this... remove the CMOS battery and turn it on. If "presto", power off, then reconnect the CMOS battery. If "nada", then sorry I got nothing else.
Two separate T60's thanked me for reviving them this way.

Re: T60 2007 bootup with blank screen
Thanks all for your replies. I adjusted the heat pad on top of the video card, and south/north bridge that may have fried both.
I boot and press fn+f7 to display on another screen. Here're some images during booting up.

http://img189.imageshack.us/i/dscf5564.jpg/
When booting up, I get two beeps.
Should I re-solder video and south/north bridge or change new mobo? What the best place to get them?
Otherwise, I'll put it up for sale or just dump it. I don't need it. This is more of a fun thing to do.
Cheers,
Khoan.

Re: T60 2007 bootup with blank screen
The 3rd picture points to a missing/disconnected CMOS battery.
But all three point to a bad videocard. My guess it's an overheated ATI X1300 or X1400.
AFAIK there is no repair for that, only a motherboard replacement.
There is no 2007-24U, that was just an example of what it looks like, see the small label with TYPE 2007-xxx on the bottom.
Underneath should also be PRODUCT ID: 2007yyy

thanks for all the response.
mine is a 2007-66U.
[censored], was hoping for a video card re-soldering experience.

Re: T60 2007 bootup with blank screen
Hi folks,
So i've got meself a board. This time i'm determined not to fry the graphics.
Planning to get copper and thermal pad installed.
_______ <-- surface of heatsink
_______ <-- thermal pad 1mm thick
_______ <-- copper plate 1mm thick
_|_|_|__ <-- surface of video card & north bridge dabbled with arctic silver
Something like this on ebay would do the trick http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HP-DV2000-DV3000- ... _500wt_922
Win or fail?
Cheers.
P.S. where can I get this silver diamond shim? http://www.electronics-cooling.com/2011 ... rmal-shim/

You'd need to sell your first-born, and pawn both kidneys, your liver, heart and brain, to get even NEAR any of that shim.
It's only under development now, AND for the military, meaning its price will be out of this world...
As to the HP parts (yeah, right... just what any Thinkpad wants!), before you start putting all that stuff in, get (or borrow) a brand new fan, then measure exactly what gaps (if any) exist between CPU/cooler and GPU/cooler.
You'll probably find, that with a new unit, there are none!
